The University Ombuds Officer serves as a facilitator for faculty and staff to foster a positive campus climate and environment. This position facilitates an accessible, independent, neutral, and informal process for problem resolution through listening, providing information, making referrals to other campus resources, and identifying options and alternatives for constituents from varying backgrounds, while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism, neutrality, and sound judgment.

The position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and promoting educational programs related to campus climate issues, as well as interpreting various CSU and university policy and procedures. In addition, the incumbent will identify trends occurring within the university, which inhibit a positive campus climate and recommends corrective action to the President and Cabinet.

Neutrality & Confidentiality: Develop a reputation for dealing fairly, neutrally, effectively, and promptly with all constituents.

Maintain the confidentiality of the parties or constituents whenever possible; in those instances in which confidentiality cannot be maintained due to legal obligations, the incumbent will inform the parties or constituents of their obligation. Advocate for fairness of policy and process, rather than advocacy of the individual.

Advising University Leadership: Serve as a campus resource for officials in formulating or modifying policy and procedures, and raise issues that might surface as a result of a gap between the stated goals of the institution and actual practice. Provide early warning of new areas of organizational concern, upward feedback, and critical analysis of systemic needs for improvement.

Communication and Problem Solving: Analyze complex situations and enact effective courses of action. Provide excellent communication with individuals at all levels of the organization from diverse backgrounds and experiences Gather and analyze information; present options, referrals, and resources; and facilitate action and resolution to issues as they arise.

Conflict Resolution: Facilitate the resolution of conflict between parties by understanding of what leads to conflict, the nature of conflict, and methods of resolution.

Independent and Collaborative: Work independently in the creation of an Ombuds Office, while demonstrating collaboration in the development of a comprehensive Ombuds program.

Inclusive Excellence: Understand issues from multiple perspectives and develop innovative options in responding to differing needs, using an open and objective approach.

Education: Design and facilitate programs to groups of varying size and hierarchical levels in the organization. Prepare, present, and evaluate ongoing presentations on such topics as dispute and conflict resolution, negotiation theory and skills, and civility and collegiality.

Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Education, Psychology or related field. Must have a minimum of five years of progressive responsibility in roles that entail a high level of trust, confidentiality, neutrality, fostering respect, and collaboration. Must demonstrate experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Position requires the ability to mediate conflicts and provide dispute resolution in a fair and objective manner. Demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to assimilate from oral or written sources. A broad knowledge of CSU and agency policies and procedures and apply them consistently preferred. Ability to assimilate, interpret and apply complex administrative policies and procedures.

Requires the ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment and have strong experience in designing and facilitating programs to groups of varying size and levels in the organization. Must have a working knowledge of higher education, its structure, culture, policies and practices. Possess strong written and oral communication skills to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, faculty, students and the general public.
