Position Summary

The University Minister for Liturgy and Spirituality promotes the University's Catholic, Jesuit, and Mercy mission through coordination and facilitation of the liturgical and spiritual needs of the Detroit Mercy community. The primary responsibilities include outreach and spiritual formation of students, colleagues, and campus partners. Organizing and coordinating University Liturgies, Masses, and communal prayer services. Care for all sacred spaces on Detroit Mercy campuses, spiritual ministration for student athletes and graduate students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1.Coordinate the liturgical life of the University.

  • Organize the logistical needs of daily and Sunday Masses and collaborate with campus partners on university-wide liturgies and prayer services on each of Detroit Mercy's campuses.

  • Coordinator of the Student Liturgical Team. This includes recruitment, formation, and coordination of student liturgical ministers.

  • Assist and maintain supplies in the sacristy of St. Ignatius Chapel on the McNichols campus and caretaker of the University chapels in Novi, Riverfront, Corktown.

2.Coordinate the sacramental life of the University

  • Collaborate with the local Jesuit parishes to coordinate and assist with the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program.

  • Be available for the weekly administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions) or organize for a substitute when needed.

3.Offer pastoral and spiritual support programs on a regular basis for student athletes.

4.Coordinate weekly student faith-sharing groups, including forming student leaders.

5.Offer pastoral and spiritual support and coordinate programs for graduate students on all campuses.

6.Offer pastoral conversations, spiritual accompaniment, and vocational discernment with students, faculty, or staff as needed.

7.Attend weekly University Ministry Team meetings and have a bi-weekly check-in with the director.

8.Other duties as assigned by the Director of University Ministry.

Other potential university opportunities depending on the minister's skills and availability:

  • Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate Ecumenical and Interfaith programs and events.

  • Coordinate special liturgies and religious services for Detroit Mercy alumni.

  • Be a part of the pastoral emergency response team to students in distress or crisis.

  • Facilitate and participate in programs such as retreats, discernment groups, or taskforces as needed.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree (MA) or equivalent in Catholic Theology, Spirituality, Religious Studies, Pastoral Studies, Divinity, or related field; a demonstrated record of at least three years work experience in Catholic Higher Education preferably at a Mercy or Jesuit institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Baptized practicing Catholic with a solid understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

  • Preference for a Jesuit or a Catholic priest (Diocesan or Religious) in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Preferred experience with young adult ministry or equivalent work experience.

  • Preferred experience with Microsoft Office, Canva or Blackboard; Making flyers; Facilitating Zoom meetings and use of social media.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

  • Commitment to fostering and maintaining a culture of belonging, respect, understanding, and inclusivity in line with the Mercy and Jesuit values of respect for te dignity of all, embracing diverse cultures and faith traditions.

  • A valid motor vehicle license and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van are required.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting: To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25lbs.; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to off-campus or other locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 25 lbs. to do manual labor projects, and travel long distances.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Licenses/Certifications

A valid motor vehicle license is required and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van.
