Job Description Summary

The Family Medicine Pharmacy Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is required to be in full and actual charge of the pharmacy. Responsible for establishing procedures that promote the efficient workflow of the pharmacy including overseeing the staff scheduling, assigning roles, and coordinating activities or projects.

The PIC must be a self-starter, be able to clearly communicate current and future plans and have a firm understanding of the dispensing operation and be able to identify areas for improvement. The PIC must be able to support clinical services and create a cohesive pharmacy team. The ability to manage change and adapt to new business opportunities is paramount.

Includes Supervisory responsibilities: will supervise Pharmacist(s), Pharmacy Technician, and multiple pharmacy interns and/or student employees.

Position will work independently under limited supervision and report to the Director of Ambulatory Program Division, who reports to the Chair for the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences.

Job Description

35% Preparation/Dispensing/Patient Care/PT Education/MTM Management: Prepare and dispense medications for patients in accordance with the provider's prescription and the South Carolina Pharmacy Practice Act.

Serve patients and the health care team by providing pharmacy-related information, monitoring patient drug therapies, detecting therapeutic incompatibilities, and providing cost-effective alternatives. Consult on patients, as applicable. Dispense non-prescription medications and other healthcare equipment as needed.

Performs retail, clinical, and wellness services such as immunizations, diabetes education, diabetic equipment education and training and other preventative healthcare services. Participates in new patient care initiatives and in patient education initiatives with a goal of improving patient care, healthcare outcomes and medication adherence. Ensure adherence with the Medication Therapy Monitoring (MTM) completion goals.

20% Patient Engagement/Communications/Inter-professional Coordination: Respond to patient or provider complaints and questions in an efficient and courteous manner.

Identify areas to improve service and communicate procedures needed to correct any deficiencies. Participate in clinic medical team meetings and consult on patient cases as needed.

10% Regulatory & Oversight- Verify that each pharmacist working/volunteering holds a current license to practice pharmacy. Verify that every pharmacy technician working/volunteering holds a current registration.

Ensures compliance with employment laws. Assume responsibility for compliance with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the State Board of Pharmacy, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration. Maintain appropriate records and files.

Ensure compliance with all university procedures and federal and state laws, rules, and regulations. Prepare for and be physically present for all inspections and audits.

10% Staff Development/Human Resource Management: Establishes expectations and goals while promoting teamwork.

Coordinates the training and development of pharmacy staff to improve performance and reduce turnover. Set goals for and evaluates all pharmacy personnel annually. Addresses employee relations concerns, maintains morale, and ensures positive employee-management relationship.

Oversee scheduling for pharmacy staff, pharmacy volunteers, and pharmacy students/interns. Serve as a preceptor for students (both IPPE and APPE) and residents, as applicable. Responsible for providing the highest quality student experiential rotations.15% Coordinate the training and development of pharmacy staff to improve performance and reduce turnover. Set goals for and evaluate all pharmacy personnel annually.

10% Environment/Supplies/Budget: Maintain and continuously improve the retail business operation by performance assessment and meeting targeted goals (e.g., prescription volume, revenue, patient adherence, patient satisfaction). Appropriately manage all cash receipts.

Maintains efficient processes for purchasing, receiving, storage, delivery, and distribution of medications and related supplies. Maintain a clean, efficient, secure, and safe pharmacy and working environment. Ensure that all pharmacy software is up-to-date and make recommendations for hardware improvements. Participate in developing an annual budget, adhere to the budget, and report significant unexpected budget variances as soon as known.

10% Travel Health Clinic Management and Staffing, 1 day/week: Develop a plan for the patient that must include patient and destination specific education and when and what appropriate vaccination(s), medication and equipment are necessary; Provide or direct the implementation of the plan.

Must make appropriate vaccine selection, whether directly administering or indirectly by ordering it; Must make appropriate prescription medicine selection, whether directly furnishing or indirectly by ordering it; Must make appropriate recommendations for non-prescription products. For returned travelers, triage and refer as appropriate.

5% Controlled Substances/Inventory/Annual Audits: Maintain accurate records for controlled substances.

Remove outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory. Assist pharmacy staff with maintaining appropriate inventory levels. Prepare for and oversee annual and bi-annual inventory audit(s).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Maintains current knowledge of information technology associated with pharmacy systems such as to provide support to patients as well as pharmacy staff and students. Maintains current knowledge and skills related to community pharmacy practice and healthcare; develops and maintains good relationships with the family medicine clinical practice including physicians, medical residents, nurses and other healthcare providers. Reaches out to both the MUSC practices and patient community to promote the pharmacy business and further enhance growth opportunities.

Minimum requirements of the Position:

BS degree or higher in Pharmacy and eligible for SC Pharmacist Licensure

Preferred: PharmD and current SC Pharmacist License; Residency or Board Certification

3-5 years experience is preferred
