JOB SUMMARY
The ED Unit Secretary integrates the multiple components of provision of clerical support services to facilitate physicians and the nursing staff in delivery of direct patient care.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
Answering incoming phone calls to the department. Answer call lights and notify appropriate ED personnel of patient request for assistance. Monitor nurse's station for customer needs with directions and information.
Assist with obtaining customer medical records from other facilities when requested by ED physician or nurse. Monitoring the immediate work area of the nurses' station including observation of cardiac monitors, reporting lethal arrhythmias to ED physicians or nurses immediately.
Contact physicians for ED team members including physicians. Preparing the on-call KDMC physicians list daily.
Maintaining all supplies involved in the operations of the nursing station. Notifying appropriate personnel regarding clerical equipment breakdown or breakdown of any equipment involved in department operation.
Assists in and maintaining adequate stock and supplies in the department. Assists in stocking necessary ED forms including but not limited to forms needed for EPIC downtime.
Radio (UHF/VHF) and Telecommunications from EMS and/or other facilities: Actively participates in radio communication and telephone reports should no staff RN be readily available to answer the call. At no time will an ED Unit Secretary issue a radio order to a paramedic or first line responder unless specifically directed to do so by the charge nurse, physician or advanced practice provider on duty.
Responsible for assuring all radiology discrepancies from radiology transcription are reported to the ED charge nurse and or physician.
EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Minimum requirement:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Must type 35 correct words per minute
Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Achieves and maintains other certifications as required by department:
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) obtained within the first 90 days
Lethal Dysrhythmia class completed within the first 90 days
Preferred qualifications:
Related experience and/or training preferred
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Works indoors in an office/clinic setting
The noise level is usually moderate
Frequently works near moving mechanical parts
Occasionallyexposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection.
Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Constantly required to maintain a stationary position behind a computer.
Frequently required to move about inside the department.
Constantly required to communicate telephonically and face to face with colleagues and customers.
Constantly required to operate a computer and telephone.
Constantly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
