Position Summary

The role of the Registered Nurse

  • Unit Manager reports to the Director of Nursing. This position is responsible for managing, directing, and planning all clinical functions of the delivery of care within the Women and Infants Services. This position directly supervises the job classes of clinical coordinator, charge nurse, RN, tech, acute care nursing assistant and unit secretary. This position assists the director in establishing and maintaining unit policies and procedures. The manager establishes effective working relationships with all constituencies including patients, patient families, physicians, employees, volunteers and vendors.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Assist the director with hiring, orienting, and supervising staff

  • Responsible for all departmental functions in support of the hospital mission, vision, and facility goals

  • Meet with staff and administration team on a regular basis to solve problems, improve quality and efficiency of patient care

  • Evaluate personnel, maintaining financial compliance, record keeping and reporting, and assists in achieving quality patient care, national patient safety goals and regulatory requirements

  • Oversee coordination of care and participates in the professional nursing care of patients within an assigned unit pursuant to the objectives and policies, the nursing process, and established nursing standards

  • Establish effective working relationships with all constituencies including patients, patient families, physicians, employees, volunteers, community partners, and vendors

  • Strive to improve and facilitate patient care and satisfaction supported with evidenced-based practices

  • Identify the cost-effective systems needed to support the business of the department, considering business trends, resource availability and changes in customers.

  • Assist in creating and implementing QI objectives in areas of nursing and patient safety

  • Establish and maintain unit policies and procedures

  • Act as an advocate in representation of all nursing staff

  • Serve as a resource in clinical situations

  • Resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work

  • Provide supervision over the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in the assigned health care setting

  • Receive formal and informal grievances and conducts preliminary discussions for settlement when necessary

  • Issue disciplinary action for employees as necessary

  • Perform full performance level professional nursing work and enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, in-service meetings, workshops, and research

  • Ensure that program and services meet accrediting standards for the Joint Commission and other accrediting programs and nationally recognized associations

  • Assist with educating staff with departmental equipment, techniques, processes, and policies

Qualifications

  • Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelors of Nursing, required.

  • Licensure and Certifications: Arkansas Registered Nurse license & CPR, required. ACLS required within 90 days. TNCC, ASLS, and Dysrhythmia required in 18 months. National certification in relevant field, preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum 3 years clinical nursing experience, required.

Work Environment: This position will spend 80% of time sitting while performing work in a standard office environment and 20% of time standing and/or walking while pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50lbs. This position will be exposed to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and radiation. This position will serve a culturally and linguistically diverse patient population.
