The responsibilities of the Unit Manager include:

  • Supervision of all nursing tasks on the unit during his/her shift.

  • Supervision, teaching, and counseling unit's nursing personnel who are providing care to residents during his/her shift. This includes having knowledge of, supporting, and interpreting administrative and nursing policies and procedures to all unit personnel.

  • Making daily rounds on each resident to evaluate needs and effectiveness of nursing care provided, following up on concerns that require further action.

  • Timely completion of MDS (nursing sections) and initiation of plan of care from the nursing assessment for each resident on the unit.

  • Supervision of unit's resident care plans, ensuring that care plans are current and relevant to resident's needs.

  • Attending monthly interdisciplinary resident care plan conferences and MD care plans as needed

  • Addressing concerns raised by resident's family members.

  • Promoting effective communication between unit personnel on all shifts, conferring with other licensed staff regarding unit and resident problems for group problem solving.

  • Ensuring monthly re-caps / orders are correct for each resident on the unit.

  • Maintaining a safe environment on the unit, reporting any concerns to appropriate department head.

  • Completing nursing staff evaluations for 7-3 shift personnel; providing input on nursing staff evaluations for 3-11 and 11-7 shifts.

  • Keeping unit stocked with all necessary supplies, notifying Nursing Administration if supplies and equipment are needed for the unit.

  • Notifying supervisor of problems or concerns involving supervised employees or with other departments and completing employee communication forms as necessary.

  • Ensuring daily assignments for all nursing personnel on the unit are completed during each shift and that assignments are done accurately and efficiently.

  • Attend weekly Medicare meeting & NAR along with participating in monthly GDR meeting.

  • Responding to any emergency or urgent resident need when called, even if on break.

  • If a need arises, performing any activity or task that a C.N.A. and/or staff nurse under his/her direction might be required to do.

  • Reading, understanding, and maintaining easy access to the Nursing Department Policy and Procedure manual.

  • Attending Team Meeting and any other meetings requested by Nursing Administration.

  • Maintaining a valid RN or LPN license from the State of Indiana at all times.

  • Full compliance with all aspects of Hooverwood's Corporate Compliance program and its Code of Conduct.

  • Maintain attendance in good standing according to attendance policy.

  • Performing other tasks as assigned by Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing and the Executive Director.

The Unit Manager completes or ensures Staff Nurses have completed the following tasks:

  • Accurate and timely transcription of physician orders.

  • Documentation in the resident record (i.e., care provided, changes in resident's condition, subjective comments made by the resident, notification to MD and family of significant changes, incidents, weekly summaries, etc.)

  • Accurate count and secure storage of all medications, including narcotics.

  • Notification of resident needs to attending or on-call MD or Nurse Practitioner.

  • Making appointments and transportation arrangements for residents who need to leave facility for outpatient services, consultations, x-rays, etc.

  • All medications and treatments have been given and are recorded in MAR/TAR.

  • Timely communication with pharmacy regarding medication changes, concerns and/or questions.

  • Each resident is assisted to dining room, receives meal tray and/or is assisted with feeding as necessary.

  • Timely communication with Nursing Administration regarding changes in resident condition, including falls, skin incidents, etc.

  • C.N.A. / staff nurse assignments on the unit are consistent with the staff member's education, preparation, and experience.

  • Actively participate in weekly wound rounds and complete all documentation necessary.

  • Nursing and general facility policies, such as narcotic counting, giving report, and other personnel policies are followed.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a RN or LPN degree from an accredited School of Nursing

  • Experience with a geriatric population preferred

  • Previous management experience preferred

Physical or Mental Functions Required to Perform Job:

The Unit Manager (1) must function effectively under timelines and multiple demands; (2) must be able to fully and effectively communicate orally and have the ability to write or type; (3) must be able to read normal print/script and computer generated type; (4) must have the ability to hear effectively; (5) must have full use of at least one arm and hand; (6) must be ambulatory.

  • Employee recognizes that the Unit Manager is considered a HIGH RISK- CATEGORY 1 for exposure to blood borne pathogens and is provided the opportunity to receive a 3 shot HBV immunizations series if he/she may wish, immediately upon receipt of the job description.
