JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Underwriting Associate partners with and supports underwriters as a critical component to an Account Team. Under broad supervision, the Underwriting Associate is responsible for renewal and new business data preparation and analysis used to inform prudent underwriting decisions throughout an account life cycle from submission through policy issuance in accordance with Underwriting Strategies and Guidelines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

1.Leveraged as the first-line point of contact to the producers/customers on account related service matters while proactively identifying opportunities for up sell or account rounding.

2.Serves as a liaison within the National Accounts Property Business Unit or across CNA functional areas to create solutions for unique, account-specific challenges (actuary, billing & collections, claims, enterprise risk management, legal / compliance / government relations, operations, reinsurance, risk control, underwriting shared services).

3.Accountable for:

  • Renewal book of business with assigned underwriters

  • Triage of renewal applications/specs and formulation of next steps for the underwriter with outlined changes or points of attention for accounts.

  • Underwriting analysis to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards for renewal and new business.

  • Endorsement requests within delegated authority. Refers endorsements outside of authority to underwriter with recommended action. Independently engages agency to clarify intent of endorsement or seek missing information.

  • File documentation -- documents assigned files ensuring completeness, compliance, and quality (correspondence, proposals, endorsements, cancellations, etc.)

  • Calculation and documentation of technical pricing using internal proprietary rating system on behalf of the Underwriter in conjunction with CNA specific underwriting strategies.

  • Preparation of quotations to provide to underwriters for negotiation with external partners and all subsequent revisions and distribution of revised quotations agreed to during negotiation.
    4.Participates in selective marketing activities with external partners on ad-hoc basis.

5.Serves as a resource to others (train, problem solver, coach) and conduit for feedback to internal underwriting partners.

6.Keeps current on line of business strategy, shared & layered marketplace trends and business implications, state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

1.Ability to visualize and carryout a detailed end-to-end underwriting workflow containing multiple handoffs with attention to accuracy, efficiency and timeliness.

2.Strong interpersonal and communications skills with ability to interact effectively with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.

3.Work independently on multiple tasks with adherence to SLAs and deadlines at underwriter's discretion.

4.Practices strong time management, and demonstrates excellent analytical skills using critical thinking to arrive at solutions and recommendations.

5.Embraces a dynamic, fast-pasted work environment with a culture of continuous learning and development.

6.Demonstrates capability to advise and coach others.

7.Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Excel) and Adobe Professional as well as other business-related software.

8.Knowledge of principles of insurance

Education & Experience

1.Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $44,000 to $74,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
