As an underwriter, you'll provide valuable, ongoing financial insights for our customers and determine accurate and competitive rates and fees for new and renewal business. You'll negotiate rates that meet our customer's financial needs while delivering high-quality products. And we'll support you in achieving more in your life and your work.

What are the goals

The new hire training program provides a thorough education on Aetna's products and services, insurance basics and risk dynamics, underwriting and risk selection and systems and tools. The knowledge and skills that the program provides will set you up to be a successful Underwriter at Aetna.

Aetna's Underwriting career framework provides opportunity for talent development and exposure to key underwriting areas within segments such as National Accounts, Public and Labor, Territories, Specialty, Medicare and International. This entry level role will support the Underwriting segments by performing accurate underwriting analysis and risk assessment for new business and/or renewal of existing customers.

What you will do

During the formal classroom (2-5 weeks) and on-the-job training the program participants will:

  • Provide underwriting support for new business and/or renewals, and/or specialized functions

  • Produce timely and accurate quotes, proposals, renewals and/or accountings

  • Perform risk assessment functions as directed

  • Utilize rating/financial tools, reference materials, prior carrier's data and source systems for premium, membership and claim information

  • Apply underwriting guidelines in qualifying risk of adding new members

  • Request additional information as necessary and explain needs

  • Maintain integrity of source data and/or accounting data systems

  • Identify and collects information critical to decision making

What you need

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of rating and/or accounting and underwriting concepts

  • Analytical and independent thinking skills

  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills

  • Knowledge of rating and underwriting concepts preferred

  • Demonstrated analytical and independent thinking skills

  • Effective communication with internal and external constituents

  • Ability to use standard corporate software packages and corporate applications

  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

You are eligible if you

  • Are currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree (Risk Management, Economics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, or related degree is preferred)
  • Have a 3.0+ major GPA (preferred)
  • an anticipated graduation date between December 2018 May 2019
  • Have a willingness to relocate (if applicable)

VIEW JOBS 2/15/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-05-16T00:00 Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities Partners with Account Executives/Underwriters to establish support needs for renewals and/or new business policies (i.e., identify/gather relevant account information to quote and/or bind the policy; create exhibits, etc.). Prepares documents and participate in pre-renewal meetings. Prepares underwriting/pricing exhibits (i.e., exposures, experience rating, profit and loss analysis, expense models, updated account information, etc.). Manages account documentation (i.e., proposals, agreement letters, reinsurance contracts, collateral agreements, policy change, endorsements, cancellations, etc.). Ensures accurate and timely servicing and billing of accounts. Communicates with brokers/agencies, MGAs, and internal departments. (i.e., researches and resolves issues, responds to inquiries and questions). Quotes accounts by reviewing exposures and experience rating, updating account information, rates and adjusts the price, as requested. May complete renewals based on formal guidelines, commonly referred to as Letter of Authority. Provides information for regulatory compliance (i.e., statutory filings, proof of insurance, certificates). Participates in projects/assignments as requested.
