Donegal Insurance Group has an opening for an Underwriter Trainee to join our Mountain States office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

About the role:

We are seeking a candidate to join our Underwriting Career Development Program. The candidate will be trained in the underwriting department. Ideal candidates will possess a 4-year college degree, previous customer service experience and demonstrate the skills and enthusiasm necessary to become an underwriting professional. Strong analytical skills and sound judgment are also required to be successful in our role.

  • Select, price and develop coverage terms for accounts to achieve profitable underwriting results and assist with providing leadership, support and coaching for the underwriting function

  • Manage a territory of independent agents to ensure that profitability and growth objectives for the company are being met

  • Review new business applications to evaluate degree of risk involved; accept or decline risks based on company's underwriting policies

Position Requirements


  • Previous experience working in a professional office environment or prior insurance related experience

  • Co-Op or Internship in related business field


  • Bachelor's Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration or related degree or equivalent industry experience

  • Demonstration of self-development by working towards attainment of professional insurance designations: INS, CPCU, ARM, API, etc.


  • Position requires a temporary relocation to Lancaster, PA for approximately three months to participate in Donegal Insurance Group's Underwriting Career Development Program. Travel expenses, housing, and use of a vehicle are provided by the company.

VIEW JOBS 4/13/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-12T00:00 Job Scope/Overview: Approves or denies mortgage loans following all Credit Union and secondary market guidelines, and may act as a Credit Committee member when applicable. Provides internal and external members with products and underwriting, using creative analytical skills to determine acceptable ways to approve mortgage loans while ensuring compliance with state, federal and Credit Union regulations. Accountability/Job Duties: * Review and evaluate information on mortgage loan documents to determine if buyer, property and loan conditions meet Credit Union, state and federal regulatory standards and the secondary market. * Evaluate income, credit, assets, and employment for all borrowers. * Analyze income tax returns. * At management's discretion, may serve as a member of the Credit Committee in setting loan amounts according to policy and in the approval/denial of loans. Request additional information as needed in order to make a decision regarding a loan. * Analyze recommendations from the Mortgage Loan Officers and help determine minimum and maximum loan amounts, setting additional conditions if necessary. * Review titles and evaluate appraisals for final approval. Set conditions for inspections. * Verify that all final conditions have been met. * Image and verify required documents for permanent electronic file. * Understand and underwrite to standards of the Automated Underwriting System (AUS). Assess AUS findings and ensure required documentation is complete. * Confirm secondary market loans are saleable. Ensure all documentation and deadlines are within the parameters set by the Credit Union and the secondary market. * Maintain working knowledge of pertinent secondary market systems (i.e. AllRegs) and locate/review supporting guidelines as necessary. * Provide guidance to Mortgage Loan Officers and Mortgage Processors regarding secondary market guidelines and criteria. * Provide substantiating documentation and responses to audit inquiries, both internal and third party. * Complete outstanding conditions for each loan file. * Process and approve/deny HELOC 10-year renewals and modifications. * Review policy on a regular basis for updates needed. * Satisfy quality control loan conditions. * Help maintain knowledgebase, to include adding procedures as needed. * Identify and communicate training opportunities for staff both individually and group to trainer and/or management. * Provide information to members, as needed, regarding loan products and services. * Provide a superior member experience by: * actively listening to and assessing the needs of the member * explaining the features and benefits of targeted products and services * offering targeted solutions to meet the member's needs Experience and Knowledge: * Minimum three years' experience originating/processing/underwriting mortgage loans. * Thorough understanding and knowledge of the secondary market and advanced proficiency with all mortgage portfolio products. * Possesses thorough understanding of laws and regulations governing lending and financial institutions. * Knowledge of SLFCU lending guidelines preferred. * Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (specifically MS Access and Word); demonstrates ability to learn and effectively utilize in house programs and third party mortgage lending software. * Strong knowledge of the products and services offered by the Credit Union. * Prior experience with SLFCU's loan portfolio desired. Interpersonal Skills: * Possesses exceptional interpersonal skills.
