Handles the daily service demands of our agents in support of individual and team goals and requires a thorough understanding of coverage, products, underwriting system transactions, and State specific LOB filings. Works independently within a letter of authority issued by the underwriting supervisor on assignments of moderate complexity, hazard grade, and premium. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.


  • Gather, analyze and evaluate risk exposure through appropriate risk documentation. Adopt proactive actions and/or make proactive recommendations to improve risk profitability.

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines in the selection and pricing of individual risks. Ensure adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification, accuracy of information and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy.

  • Answer incoming calls from agents responding to inquiries on coverage, and making adjustments to policy information based upon prescribed authority on Commercial Property and Casualty lines of business. Conduct outbound calls and follow-up work to agents required to close out inquiry/transaction.

  • Work within specific authority level to quote, accept, decline, modify and renew risks within territorial assignment in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines. Work in unison with Agents, Regional Underwriters, AMS, and other departments to grow and maintain a profitable book of business.

  • Provide guidance to Agents and other departments regarding various underwriting information. Effectively communicate underwriting decisions and appetite to agents. Reinforce the ease of doing business with Selective by meeting or exceeding agent expectations and service quality on a consistent basis.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Communicate openly and in a timely fashion. Participate in the development of team goals and work diligently to achieve them. Support all team decisions.

  • Increase renewal premium by cross-selling additional coverage, products or service.

  • Conduct continuous profit and growth analysis by territory and agency as assigned. Monitor premium retention with the use of electronic reporting tools.

  • Conducts agency visits as required.

  • Trains and mentors lower levels. May be viewed as line specialist for one or more commercial lines of business.


  • College degree preferred

  • Must have 2-5 years of underwriting experience

  • Demonstrate proficiency in usage of all supplied desktop tools, including the automated underwriting and email systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers/peers.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change as the company moves forward in its strategic vision.

  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.

VIEW JOBS 3/31/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-06-29T00:00 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Provide technical expertise to support an underwriting framework that produces profitable business. * Travel with regional personnel to assist in educating agents and selling accounts on Selective's products and services within assigned business segment. * Develop distribute effective marketing materials to regional personnel, agents, and others to assist them in better understanding the value associated with Selective's products and services within assigned business segments. * Create and provide educational materials and training programs for regional personnel and agents to ensure thorough understanding of products and services. * Attend AMS conferences, road shows, sales meetings, etc., to actively promote Selective's products and services within Large Accounts. * Develop excellent working relationships with regional personnel to ensure they are comfortable in requesting assistance in order to explore as many account opportunities from their agents as possible. * Provide exceptional customer service to regional personnel and agents. * Monitor Large Account results and pro-actively identify trends (positive and negative), and recommend strategies that could improve results. * Assist the regions with 1) securing additional new business by providing expertise in underwriting and pricing large, unique and/or complex accounts, and 2) Identifying creative ways to successfully write unique accounts. * Actively participate in all aspects of effective quality control assessments. These may include conducting new and renewal account audits, monitoring, and assessing scorecards, large loss analysis, action plans, etc. * Must be able to drive an automobile to travel with regional personnel to assist in educating agents and selling accounts on Selective's products and services. Travel represents approximately 30% of employee's time. REQUIREMENTS: * College degree preferred. * 8-10 years commercial lines experience * 5+ years risk management preferred * 5+ years Field Underwriting preferred * 5+ years agency experience; and/or 5+ year's specific business segment experience preferred * Leading project teams * Excellent customer service, networking and relationship building skills * Excellent sales and negotiation skills * Strong problem-solving ability, and excellent presentation skills * Proven leadership capability * Pro-active, driven, takes initiative and has a strong underwriting curiosity * Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
