  • Fundamentals of coverage, terms and conditions. Ability to offer coverage, terms and conditions which generate a profit for the Company while meeting the needs of the customer.

  • Risk Assessment. Ability to identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls. Ability to select risk based on exposure and risk analysis. Ability to analyze claims and quantify losses.

  • Financial proficiency. Understanding of financial statements and ratios used in risk analysis. Understanding of insurance financial fundamentals; impact of underwriting decisions on company assets. Ability to understand credit risk.

  • Actuarial fundamentals. Ability to understand loss trends, loss triangles, and ratemaking. Ability to quantify risk based on experience history and forecasting methods.

  • Marketing and communications. Ability to sell and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company. Ability to make presentations and communicate articulately. Ability to base communications on strategic thinking. Ability to manage producer strategy.

  • Systems and programs. Ability to use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business.


Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Solicits new and renewal submissions from brokers

  • Determines terms and conditions and complex rating plans

  • Binds coverage

  • Documents the underwriting files

  • Handles more complex files and portfolios within underwriting authority

  • Guides and mentors junior staff


  • At least 2 years of underwriting experience

  • Experience with multiple lines of insurance

  • Bachelor's degree preferred


  • Knowledge of insurance industry

  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Oral and written communication skills

  • Negotiation skills

  • Marketing skills

  • Basic leadership skills

VIEW JOBS 1/12/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-04-11T00:00 Location: Uniondale, New York, New York General Statement of Duties: The CRE Underwriter is primarily responsible for the underwriting, due diligence, and credit analysis of new commercial real estate loans for the Bank's balance sheet. They are responsible for preparing complete and accurate credit analysis in a timely manner that meet or exceed internal business partner needs, customer expectations, regulatory requirements and leading industry practices, while protecting the Bank by providing an unbiased and objective view of the prospective borrower and transaction and thoroughly disclosing all identified risks. Major Duties & Responsibilities: * Calculate property-level cash flow, validate appropriate debt amounts, and assess the overall creditworthiness of the proposed transaction. Prepare property-level proforma I&E statements and develop an estimate of property value. * Research/obtain appropriate market data to support underwriting assumptions. * Perform Borrower/Sponsor and Guarantor financial analysis, including sponsors global cash flow. * Determine the appropriate financial information and due diligence requirements to properly evaluate the transaction and sponsorship. Works with Loan Officer and Loan Processor to obtain the information in a timely fashion. * Review commercial leases and prepare lease synopsis. * Prepare spreads utilizing the Bank's origination platform and templates. * Review all third-party reports, including appraisal, environmental, seismic, flood, and credit reports, to confirm risks have been properly identified and addressed. * Prepare credit memorandums, utilizing the Bank's standard forms and templates, summarizing transaction fundamentals, credit analysis and due diligence results. * Assemble the approval package utilizing the bank's origination system. * Identify, investigate and escalate credit concerns or questions. * Ensure that loans conform to Bank's lending policies, guidelines and procedures. * Recommend a Risk Rating, utilizing Bank's standard methodology. * Work with Loan Officers, Loan Closers, and others to resolve credit-related issues during the origination & closing process. * Draft post-approval Final Review Memo. * Validate the accuracy of the data entered into the Bank's loan origination system utilizing the Bank's standard methodology. Other Duties: * Collect data and prepare ad hoc special reports for senior management as requested. * Performs data input and reporting, and participates in department-wide special projects as needed. Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting or a related business discipline, or military experience. * Minimum of four years directly related experience underwriting balance sheet loans. * Strong knowledge of CRE underwriting techniques, regulations and guidelines * Solid understanding of CRE loan documentation, practices and regulations. * Strong understanding of business and personal tax returns, financial statements, leases, and credit profiles. * Ability to analyze CRE appraisals and environmental reports * Proficiency with MS Office, including Word and Excel. * Completion of a bank credit training program is desirable.
