Job Description

A student internship position is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Renewable Resources and Enabling Sciences Center. The intern will be supporting research and development (R&D) activities by supporting the Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry (MBMS) pipeline.

This internship will focus on assisting with the set-up and execution of laboratory experiments involving preparation of biomass for hydrolysis and for analysis by Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry (MBMS) as well as other analyses in a laboratory setting. Specific tasks include check-in and processing (including milling, weighing, extracting, etc.) of large numbers of biomass samples for high-throughput analysis. These tasks require the intern to effectively communicate with their mentor and other laboratory members about the expected work, progress toward completing that work, and any issues that arise.

This internship will involve extensive time in a laboratory environment and it is essential for the intern to support a safe and efficient work environment. Clear record keeping with special attention to data traceability, unexpected observations and errors in procedures is necessary.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master's degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate (full time in the summer, part time during school) with demonstrated experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.

  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated experience in a chemistry laboratory (other than as part of a class) is preferred.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with a programming language (e.g., Python, R, C++) is preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,000 - $54,400

Benefits Summary

Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
