Job Overview
The Sonographer provides patient services using diagnostic ultrasound equipment. The Sonographer is competent in the production and analysis of ultrasound images used by physicians for patient diagnosis and treatment. In addition, the individual must be prepared to render quality patient care by exercising discretion and judgment in the performance of sonographic services. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Essential Functions:
Demonstrates knowledge of: gross and sectional anatomy; physiology, pathology and pathophysiology; acoustical physics, Doppler, ultrasound principles and ultrasound instrumentation
Demonstrates anatomy under investigation using ultrasound imaging techniques
Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all, ultrasound equipment within the department
Performs all routine ultrasound procedures and views according to the department procedure manual
Process to review exposed sonogram films for proper positioning, technique, identification
Possesses the ability to do mathematical calculations and use instrument controls
Employs professional judgment and discretion and adheres to regulatory requirements for universal precautions, patient safety and patient privacy. Confirms patient identification by two forms of identification
Maintains competency through continuing education. Understands published statements regarding interaction between ultrasound and tissue and the probability of biological effects in clinical examination to provide accurate information to patients, physicians and other health care providers
Checks equipment, supplies and accessories on a regular basis. Reports equipment related problems to Ultrasound Supervisor or Administrative Director
Provides basic patient care and comfort including: Providing gowning instructions, Assuring patient privacy, Providing explanation of exam being performed at an age appropriate level to the patient and/or care giver, Assists in the movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers and radiographic tables, Checks requisition for physician notations and / or special instructions, Consults with supervision, radiologist and/or other physician regarding examinations as necessary
Recognizes emergency situations, initiates code procedures
