Position Description

Under the primary supervision of the assistant supervisors, this position is responsible for the safe, efficient applications of products to control mosquito populations in response to surveillance data. During periods of low to no mosquito-borne disease transmission, this position will assist other areas of Mosquito and Vector Control as needed. Primary supervision for this position will be the responsibility of the ULV Night Supervisor and Assistant ULV Night Supervisors.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Applies insecticides by driving truck-mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spray equipment through assigned areas at night and enters data into the ULV monitoring system.

  • Performs appropriate control measures to mosquito populations in assigned areas as required.

  • Monitors environmental and mechanical conditions during insecticidal applications to ensure accurate delivery of material

  • Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines, and records all usage.

  • Assists in washing trucks, preventative maintenance on ULV equipment, building and grounds maintenance, cleaning duties, testing ULV, and tracking equipment performance before spray season starts.

Requirements

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Licenses/Certifications Required:

  • Valid Driver's License (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required for daily surveillance and collection of species

Experience Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work evening and night schedules when required

  • Ability to read and comprehend road maps

  • Must comprehend chemical labels and be willing to work with control-related chemicals (e.g., insecticides)

  • Willing to cooperate and assist other sections in MVCD to accomplish the division's mission

Computer Proficiency:

  • Basic skills using Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must be able to operate the keyboard interface of the ULV Monitor 4 spray system used in the spray truck fleet

  • Possesses the mechanical technical skills and knowledge required to perform essential tasks in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrates the willingness and ability to train or coach others in the technical arena.

Typical Hours of Work

  • Part-Time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt. up to 40 hrs per week

  • During season: ULV - (overnight) 8:30PM- 5:00AM

  • Period of low disease transmission: 7:30-4:00 PM

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift at least 70lbs, be in good physical health, able to tolerate high heat and humidity for extended periods of time outdoors while working in a variety of urban and natural environments.

  • Must be able to sit and drive with occasional breaks.

  • Field work may require walking on an incline, through brush and fields, lifting, stooping, and bending.

Other Requirements:

  • Must work nights, weekends, and holidays as required to accomplish the mission of MVCD.

  • Must have a good driving record. (Will be verified)

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • LV - Position will primarily be assigned to operate a truck and application equipment in the assigned area at night while maintaining radio communication.

  • Must work nights, weekends, and holidays as required to accomplish the mission of MVCD.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.

Must provide own safety shoes. Will be responsible for performing a daily pre, mid and post trip bummer to bummer maintenance related vehicle safety inspection; also any operative service duties such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure and, daily cleaning of vehicle at the end of shift.This position is also considered an essential worker and frontline responder during disaster recovery efforts.An acceptable clear driving record is required. May perform special assignments as directed. Essential job duties and responsibilities for the (Senior Refuse Truck Driver) includes but not limited to: * Expected to transport bulk waste and heavy trash such as household materials, discarded small furniture items, etc., to and from specified destination i.e., landfills, neighborhood depository sites, transfer stations and resource recovery plants. * Completes and submits records on check-in times, number and tonnage of each load, amount of fuel used and odometer readings on vehicle. * May perform physical labor in loading packer or open-bed refuse truck(s). WORKING CONDITIONS The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are occasional exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing. Requires the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fairly fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within moderate tolerance demands. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS One year of driving experience with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Must have a valid Class A and/or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2). PREFERENCES Class A CDL (Commercial Drivers License) preferred. Tractor Trailer and/or Rear Loader experience a plus.
