Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Full Time Mental Health Staff Nurse for the Northern State Prison, located in Newark, New Jersey.

The Mental Health Staff Nurse demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths and also identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Collects and assesses continuous clinical data that is comprehensive, accurate and systematic as a basis for decisions regarding nursing practices.

  • Actively participates in the inmate's multi-disciplinary planning sessions as measured by nursing statement, signature on the team treatment plan form, and supervisory review.

  • Uses knowledge of behavioral concepts such as anxiety, loss, grief and anger to assist the inmate in coping, adapting and dealing constructively with feelings.

  • Participates in in-service meetings and educational programs either as attendee or as a teacher, as arranged and approved by supervisor.

Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.    Among the key duties of this position are the following:  * Gives clinical care and manages all aspects of nursing care for inmates in the Department of Corrections'  * (DOC) facilities including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family.  * Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders: to develop inmate  * treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate's needs.  * Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health of all age groups.  * Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.  * Performs additional duties that are directly related to the workings of the milieu and its safety, as demonstrated by documentation in specific paperwork and by supervisory observations.
