THE POSITION

The Department of Labor & Industry is seeking a UCC Building Plans Examiner with an extensive knowledge of state building code laws and regulations. This position gives you the opportunity to examine architectural drawings and/or other data to determine compliance with applicable laws and regulations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a UCC Building Plans Examiner, you will be responsible for reviewing architectural or schematic plans for new construction and/or alterations to existing construction, with the owner, architect, engineer or other representative for compliance with applicable laws and/or regulations. This includes reviewing files and records for prior approvals, preliminary reviews, Industrial Board Orders, and Bureau Orders. You will focus on calculating plan approval fees to assure that the proper fee is paid for services, updating computer records of the Bureau file and order tracking system, answering telephone and mail correspondence inquires, and handling research of special projects. You will have the opportunity to attend meetings to assist in the explanation and/or interpretation of laws, regulations, and/or Bureau procedures as well as assist in determining the validity of written complaints against local Building Code Officials concerning the enforcement and administration of the Uniform Construction Code and prepares responses in kind.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the UCC Building Plans Examiner Trainee program; or

  • Three years of experience in commercial, industrial or other public use building construction, design or inspection work which involved the application of state building code laws and regulations.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires a valid certification issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as an Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner.

  • This position requires one of the following valid certifications issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: Building Plans Examiner, Electrical Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner, Plumbing Plans Examiner, or Energy Plans Examiner.
