Position Summary:

The Academic Elective Instructor will provide instruction in a variety of academic elective topics not limited to, but inclusive of the following topics: Robotics, Coding, Engineering, Architecture etc. Will hire individual candidates for each subject, or a candidate qualified to teach multiple subjects.

Essential Functions:

Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive instructional program for students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program. Conduct an integrated Academic Elective class on various topics, ranging from but not limited to: Robotics, Coding, Engineering, Architecture, etc., teach students learning strategies, conduct teaching and instructional activities using educational equipment, manipulative objects, props and other learning aids, prepare and submit a course outline prior to the start of the class, assist with the planning, instruction and evaluation of tutoring and problem solving activities, complete paperwork associated with classroom and project management, make recommendations on students' strength and needs, report student learning and behavioral issues to the appropriate staff personnel, and assist with the training and evaluation of Teacher Assistants.

Instructors are required to attend training and meetings. In the event of an absence please provide 24 hour notice. Classroom work must be prepared for students and the TA must be prepared to deliver work or conduct an activity to students in the absence of an instructor.

Additional Functions:

Transport students from one class location to another in a timely manner, ensuring proper supervision and safety of students.

Essential Characteristics:

Candidate should posses a high level of integrity, have experience working with minority students populations. Must be organized and assertive.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

Two or more years of teaching experience at the high school or post-secondary level, complete a background clearance check, ability to plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive instructional tutoring program for students enrolled in the Educational Talent Search Program, undergraduate or graduate degree in designated discipline, experience working with minority and disadvantaged students at the middle school, high school or post-secondary level.

Essential Functions: Under the leadership of the Resident Hall Director and Assistant Director, Resident Hall Assistants will help create a safe learning and living environment for Upward Bound Students. RAs will escort students on campus, conduct tutoring, supervise or conduct learning, cultural and recreational activities, attend all meetings and training activities, enact good judgement when making decisions, communicate academic and personal development of students to the appropriate staff members. Essential Characteristics: Must abide by the university's core values which include excellence, integrity, civility, social responsibility, diversity and communication. Prerequisite Qualifications: Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, previous experience in a residential housing facility, leadership and supervisory abilities, required to live in the residence hall for the duration of the summer program, must be able to perform in an on-call environment, ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities, ability to exercise initiative and sound judgement. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in a residential housing facility, preferable at a college/university. At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted, where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
