Description of Position

Tutor Description:

We currently have openings for Business-B.S., Math, Science, English, and Nursing (RN-BSN), Tutors for the Spring and Fall 2024 Semester.

Tutors provide academic assistance to registered Yavapai College students. The delivery may be individual, small group, drop-in, or through workshops. Tutors provide a supportive learning environment that fosters academic success for all students.

Tutors assist students to better understand course materials, thereby improving their potential for academic success, by employing positive tutoring techniques & critical thinking strategies, and coaching students in effective study techniques. Tutors may also be asked to make suggestions for test preparation, and provide assistance with Canvas, e-mail, or other learning technology.

Academic Coach Description:

The Academic Coach position will work to empower students to identify and achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals through guided coaching sessions. Assess students' needs and evaluate academic progress, support acclimation to college, and assist in developing academic strategies for success. The coach will connect students to resources at Yavapai College and in the community and support YC retention efforts. Assist students in developing self-efficacy and help students to identify, develop and implement learning strategies and study skills.

Work locations, schedules, and the number of hours may vary based on student needs.

Other duties may include front desk customer service, participating in the development and delivery of workshops, conferring with faculty about course assignments and requirements, promoting program services throughout the campus, maintaining records on student contacts, researching and distributing resources for a particular subject area, creating flyers, and assisting students using the computer lab with MS Office programs and Canvas courseware.

All tutors are required to earn the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification as part of their regular duties and may be required to participate in additional tutor training opportunities.

Minimum Expectations & Requirements

  • 3.0 cumulative college grade point average or better including a minimum of 12 credits of academic coursework
  • B or better letter grade in the course(s) to be tutored
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in the subject area(s) to be tutored

  • Ability to explain concepts to others effectively and in a variety of ways

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Computer literacy (Canvas, INTERNET searches, Microsoft Office programs & email) - Experience working in a team setting with a diverse student population

  • The cover letter must address why and what subject(s) you would tutor, hours available for work, minimum expectations and requirements, and any preferred skills and abilities you possess for this position, and the campus where you prefer to work

  • Instructor recommendations required for each subject area to be tutored (recommendation forms available from hiring supervisor) - Resume

  • Unofficial transcripts

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of varied learning styles and corresponding instructional strategies

  • CRLA certification or other tutor training

  • Experience working in a college environment with a variety of age groups

  • Bachelor's degree or higher

  • Work experience in a community college/higher education environment
