Starting pay rate is between $22.07 - $25.34 an hour based on experience and certification per the AFSCME 1386A Working Agreement.

$22.07 - $24.34 an hour without certification

$22.57 - $24.84 an hour with a New Hampshire Water Distribution and Sewer Collection License Grade I

$23.07 - $25.34 an hour with a New Hampshire Water Distribution and Sewer Collections License Grade II

Additional pay for on-call and overtime per the AFSCME 1386A Working Agreement

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled municipal maintenance and construction work and operate heavy trucks as required to complete work assignments. Included are assignments such as the installation and repair of water mains, hydrants, services, sewer mains, sewer structures and laterals; drainage systems construction, maintenance, and repair; trench hand grading and pipe laying, street repairs and paving. This role participates in snow and ice control operations, street cleaning, other seasonal clearing and cleaning operations; grounds maintenance, vegetation trimming, cutting and removal; back filling, loading and transporting; and implementing job site and work safety procedures.

Performance is subject to review according to the City's personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Regularly operates varied GVW ten and six wheel dump and flatbed trucks or smaller with or without a trailer.

  • When working as a crew leader individual directs the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers in routine maintenance and construction activities as assigned such as clearing debris and vegetation, painting, putting antifreeze in hydrants, the installation and repair of water mains, hydrants, services, sewer mains, structures, manholes and laterals, laying asphalt, patching and repairing ditches.

  • Operates on an emergency and seasonal basis trucks and equipment for winter snow and ice removal and control and other seasonal clean-up operations.

  • When not engaged in operating a truck, this position performs various semi-skilled tasks essential to public works and utility operations using a wide variety of power, pneumatic, and hand tools.

  • Prepares, maintains and performs job site and work safety practices.

  • Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS -

Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), have a strong knowledge of how to care for, operate and use heavy equipment effectively and efficiently and not less than three years' experience in construction or maintenance work.

New hires must obtain before the end of their probationary period and incumbents must possess a valid commercial driver's license, class B and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City. Must possess a NH Water Distribution License Grade I, and a NH Sewer Collection License Grade I, or the ability to acquire appropriate licensing within eighteen (18) months from the date of original appointment. Additional certifications and licensing may be required.
