Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

  • This position is onsite with flexibility of varying remote hours.

Shift: Monday-Friday, 7:00AM-3:30PM

FTE for this position is .833 (10 Months Annually- September 1 - June 30th)

  • This is a grant funded position. Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability and continued receipt of these funds.

Provides advising services to program participants in the designated target school(s). Provides direct support to program students in the areas of advising, academic plan development, financial aid, scholarship, college applications, tutoring, financial literacy, career exploration, and program orientation. Collaborates with target school and district personnel to deliver services to participants and to recruit participants to the program. Supports the ETS Coordinator with participant eligibility, recruitment, and selection processes.

Essential Duties

  • Provides students with information, support, and mentoring related to academic plan development, financial aid, scholarship and college applications, tutoring and study skills, financial literacy, career exploration, and program orientation, through individual and small group meetings. Drives in a safe and appropriate manner between worksites.

  • Collaborates with target school staff and other on-site community agencies, as appropriate, to deliver services to program participants and recruit new students to the program.

  • Provides personalized assessment of participants' barriers to support them to successfully complete educational goals and attain federal program objectives. Provides mentoring to students to help them overcome barriers to high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment.

  • Refers students to additional school and community resources, as necessary, to address student needs beyond the scope of the advisor and ETS program.

  • Assists with planning and execution of group activities such as financial aid and scholarship workshops, campus visits to post-secondary institutions, cultural enrichment trips, and other events that support program objectives.

  • Complies with TRIO legislation and regulations, as directed by the Director of TRIO Programs.

  • Maintains required information in program databases, including student contacts for services log and current information/data to indicate academic progress.

Additional Duties

  • Provides assistance to the ETS Coordinator, as directed.

  • May serve on target school, MHCC, regional TRIO Association, and community partner committees relating to support for disadvantaged students and college access issues at the Director of TRIO Programs discretion.

  • Performs all other related duties as requested.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in education, social work, psychology or related field

Experience/Training:

  • Minimum (3) years of career and/or academic advising experience in a middle and/or high school setting, including experience collaborating with post-secondary institutions to help students with a seamless transition from high school to college.

  • Experience working in a culturally diverse setting with disadvantaged populations, including academic need, low income, first generation, and individuals with disabilities

  • Intermediate-level skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Current driver's license, insurance, and the ability to be insured by the college insurance carrier. Must have at least three (3) years of driving history

  • Ability to pass a background check including FBI Fingerprinting, and maintain eligibility throughout employment

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, social work, psychology or related field

  • Bilingual skills with fluency in English and Spanish, Russian, or other language that meets community needs

  • Experience organizing and conducting educational workshops and/or events for high school or middle school youth.

  • Experience working with current TRIO partner schools.

  • Experience with Blumen and/or Synergy software systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and legislation related to TRIO programs

  • Ability to maintain timely and accurate records of student/client contacts

  • Knowledge of student financial aid and college admissions processes

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, in a highly dynamic work environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively, independent of on-site supervision.

  • Knowledge of current computer software packages including intermediate-level knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and email applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite

Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office setting and the position interacts with a variety of individuals including students or clients who may be emotional and exhibit stressful behavior at times. Heavy computer use and repetitive hand/wrist motion for keyboarding functions are typical. Driving required for job assignments located at off-campus sites.

Salary:

Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
