The TRiO Advisor and Retention Specialist is responsible for working with the Director of TRiO to ensure program compliance, services, and activities of the Federal TRIO Student Support Services Program which serves low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities and advising the caseload of the TRiO students. In addition, the Advisor and Retention Specialist will oversee the TRiO Achievers program, a program modeled after the TRiO program to serve students who were formerly in foster care, homeless, DACA, and undocumented students, and in general the wider population of students.

This position is responsible for caseload management, academic advising, and program development. The individual will work in collaboration with Student Services and Academic Affairs departments including Enrollment Services, Educational Planning, Financial Aid, Counseling, Advising, Multicultural Services, Access Services, and the Tutoring Center.

This position is an exempt, salaried overtime-eligible, at-will, full-time position. Hours of work may include evenings, weekends, and occasional travel.

Essential Tasks

Reporting directly to Director of TRiO, this position will:

  • Work with the Director to manage program activities and services, including Academic Advising, Financial Aid and Financial Literacy Advising, Career Counseling and Transfer Advising;

  • Maintain an annual caseload of 80-90 TRiO and Passport to College students and monitor academic progress, and provide interventions;

  • Coordinate the recruitment and selection of program eligible participants under the program admissions process; assure that all grant guidelines regarding Student Support Services eligibility are met;

  • Advise student to develop Student Success Plans to meet their academic goals, and design intervention strategies to increase academic performance (quarterly progress reports, academic skills development, etc.);

  • Coordinate program events and activities (workshops, campus visits, activities events);

  • Facilitate completion of applications to baccalaureate institutions, financial aid, and scholarships of project participants;

  • Document and record students need for services, academic support, and verification of income, first generation status, and/or disability;

  • Maintain timely and accurate student records including contact logs, case notes, and files;

  • Work with TRiO team to coordinate program activities: student success seminars, annual events and awards ceremonies;

  • Track progress of students served, including but not limited to: student academic standing; student program participation; student persistence, graduation and transfer rates;

  • Maintain professional relationships with TRiO professionals and alumni; participate in the HC Advisor's group and campus wide committees.

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing;

  • Utilize technology, internet, database and software systems;

  • Demonstrate cultural competency and commitment to working with a diverse, multicultural, first generation, low income and students with disabilities;

  • Manage a caseload effectively;

  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission of a community college.

Knowledge of:

  • Program compliance rules and regulations;

  • Academic advising and program development;

  • Compliance with grant related programs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Baccalaureate degree AND
  • One year experience inadvising, caseload management, or counseling.

OR

  • Associates Degree and; AND
  • Experience minimum of three years coordinating programs in a college setting, human services or a related field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree; AND

  • Three years' experience in advising, caseload management, or counseling;

  • TRiO experience;

  • Ability to effectively communicate in two or more languages.
