The North Carolina Business Court (Charlotte Division) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Staff Law Clerk to assist the Court in evaluating, administering, and managing cases involving complex business and commercial matters that are designated and assigned to the Court.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Draft orders and opinions on both dispositive and non-dispositive matters reflecting the decision of the Court.
Cite check and proofread orders and opinions for grammar, organizational structure, legal accuracy, and clarity prior to filing.
Communicate with counsel regarding case management matters.
Schedule and attend case conferences, hearings, and trials.
Assist the judges and term law clerks in evaluating and administering assigned cases.
Conduct legal research on a variety of commercial, business, and procedural issues.
Analyze complex legal data and issues.
Serve as a mentor to term law clerks, including providing training to incoming clerks, and supervising judicial interns.
Assist with review and presentation of materials at annual term law clerk orientation.
Assist judges with posting of clerkship and internship positions and selection of term law clerks and judicial interns.
Track current developments in the law applicable to the Court's work.
Assist Senior Court Coordinator as necessary to provide administrative support.
This position reports to the Business Court Judges in Charlotte. Work hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Some remote work permitted with prior permission.
Knowledge of and familiarity with: court rules and procedures; case, statutory, regulatory, and common law; ethical rules; the practical aspects of trial court level practice; and electronic legal research methods and procedures.
Skills in: strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills; familiarity with Uniform Citation Rules contained in the Bluebook; and effective communication in a professional setting.
Ability to: analyze facts, laws, rules, regulations, interpretations, and written documents and apply them to specific legal issues; produce legal interpretations in an efficient, timely, and responsive manner for court officials; communicate clearly and concisely in both written and oral formats; recognize and solve problems; act as a professional representative of the Court; and collaborate and work well as a member of a team.
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
Management prefers that candidates be licensed to practice law and have served as a law clerk and/or practiced law for at least two (2) years after graduation from law school.
