You should also have:
10+ years or more of commercial insurance defense litigation, trial experience, and / or agency hearing representation experience
JD Degree from an accredited law school
Licensed as an attorney in appropriate US jurisdiction
Demonstrated ability to market skills to strengthen relations with clients and claims partners
Deep expertise in complex matters of insurance defense law
Adherence to Private Practice of Law policy
Ability to prioritize tasks and take ownership of decisions
A typical day in the life of a Trial Attorney:
Managing a case load of complex legal issues for Nationwide clients
Proactive in case strategy and reports
Initiate and maintain substantive, constant and professional communications with internal and external customers
Contributes and provides subject matter expertise on significant, high-risk, and complex legal matters
Represents members in trials or hearings before courts or agencies, including appeals and arbitrations
Evaluates cases in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division best practices
Collaborate, direct and oversee the activities of support staff to accomplish goals
Recognize and promote settlement opportunities
Shares relevant information with members and Nationwide Claims department to ensure they are fully informed
Obtain meaningful discovery through deposition of parties and experts
Participate in motions practice as warranted
Completing other litigation and file handling tasks as needed

Core Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads, directly represents or provides subject matter expertise on significant, high-risk or complex legal matters, representing clients in trials or hearings before courts or agencies, including appeals and arbitrations. May lead a team in a specialized practice area.
Reviews and evaluates cases and lawsuits in accordance with established NTD Best Practices Guidelines. Proficiently interprets and explains insurance contracts and coverage issues; strong knowledge of state and local practices and rules.
Works with client and claims to establish, communicate and implement Litigation Plan. Keeps client and claims fully informed. Fosters, develops and promotes relationships with Claims; has contact with Claims management and uses initiative to help develop, expand and retain business.
Prepares and tries cases regardless of complexity and unlimited exposure in all courts and agencies, including cases involving toxic substances, extensive injuries, permanent injuries and/or ongoing treatment. Cases may involve inflammatory factors (DUI, death of a child, egregious).
Recognizes, participates and promotes settlement opportunities. Negotiates as authorized. Trains other attorneys on negotiation skills and tactics
Takes depositions of parties and experts; obtains meaningful discovery and participates in motions practice as warranted. May mentor other trial attorneys with respect to deposition practices and techniques.
May train or mentor less experienced trial attorneys or paralegals on procedural or legal issues. May create and conduct training for Claims.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: JD Degree from an accredited law school.
License/Certification/Designation: Currently licensed as an attorney in an appropriate U.S. jurisdiction. Maintains an active license in the state in which the position is located.
Experience: Seasoned attorney in an area of law. Typically has ten or more years of civil litigation, trial experience and/or agency hearing representation experience, as well as substantial jury trial experience as lead counsel.
Has deep or significant experience in one or more specific or highly specialized area of law.
Considered the subject matter expert within his or her area of legal expertise and/or possesses strong leadership skills to manage an area of expertise. Complex legal practices and procedures. Substantive civil law, Insurance contracts.
Skills/Competencies: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Significant negotiation skills, excellent analytical and legal skills. Resourceful, computer savvy with a working knowledge of basic software and use of the same. Strong time management and organization skills.
Very comfortable with contact at all levels of management and clients. Decision-making ability to set work priorities. Legal research techniques.
Decision-making ability to set work priorities and make recommendations. Ability to initiate, organize and coordinate complex projects and cases. Leadership skills used in direct and/or indirect influencing such as motivating, problem solving, business strengthening and development.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
