The Triage Assistant assists the Triage RN in greeting and receiving patients who present to the Emergency Department for care. An essential element for the position is Customer Service as demonstrated by compassionate care and timeliness of service. The Triage Assistant will gather initial patient data and, under direction from the Triage RN or Charge Nurse, perform key initial interventions when appropriate. Duties include placing patients in rooms, organizing charts, transportation of patients, room cleaning, and clinical interventions such as phlebotomy, IV insertion, splint application, application of cardiac monitor, 12-Lead EKG performance, and specimen collection. The Triage Assistant also assists with room turnover, supply management, visitor control, and updates to waiting visitors. Reports directly to the Charge Nurse and works collaboratively with the Triage RN.
What you will do in this role:
Assists with and performs skilled procedures as delegated by professional staff and physicians in accordance with Emergency Department policies and procedures.
Recognizes and reports changes in patient's condition to the Charge Nurse.
Performs and documents vital signs in accordance with departmental standards.
Performs intermediate procedures as directed by the Registered Nurse within the scope of practice including, but not limited to, obtaining 12-Lead EKG's, removal of IV catheters, removal of foley catheters, fingerstick blood sugars, and transporting of patients within and outside of the Emergency Department.
Performs specimen collection of blood, drainage, and stool.
Performs blood draws for lab specimens and blood cultures with IV insertion, as directed by the Registered Nurse and after documented competency is completed.
Responds to patients' call lights to determine patient's needs, assists patients within scope of practice, and relays information to appropriate nursing personnel.
Provides wound care and demonstrates knowledge of emergency burn maintenance and treatment. Applies/changes patient's simple dressings, binders, and bandages.
Documents patient charges prior to discharge, completely and accurately according to established departmental methods.
Assures adequate/appropriate supplies at bedside and in the Emergency Department per shift according to established departmental standards and par levels.
Attends 100% of mandatory staff meetings and in-services and 50% of non-mandatory.
Communicates effectively and professionally with internal and external customers. Maintains competence and effectiveness with EMS communications.
Maintains patient and treatment rooms in a clean and orderly manner, with inclusion of, but not limited to, restocking of supplies, linen maintenance, and cleaning of stretchers to prepare for next patient.
Accepts assignment of Unit Secretary as deemed necessary.
Participates and assists with the flow of Emergency Department patient chart documentation. Assembles and maintains patient charts and places in appropriate location.
Applies monitoring devices as deemed appropriate.
Responsible for assisting patients in toileting and limited transport as deemed necessary by Emergency Department staff.
Consistently demonstrates effective and professional communication skills with internal and external customers.
Demonstrates flexibility and a willingness to assist in any and all duties as deemed appropriate by Emergency Department staff.
Demonstrates and applies fiberglass or plaster splint for a variety of injuries as directed by the physician or mid-level provider.
Demonstrates the proper fitting and use of canes, crutches, and walkers.
What qualifications you will need:
Licensed Paramedic or EMT-IV or Certified Nurse Assistant is preferred.
BLS certification required upon hire.
Experience in Emergency Department setting, or actively enrolled in nursing program, is preferred.
