Duties

Summary

These positions are located at George Washington Memorial Parkway in the Maintenance Support Division.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Responsibilities

Use tools and equipment such as chainsaws, stump grinders, brush chippers, aerial platforms, and spray equipment to perform all facets of tree maintenance work.
Climb trees up to 120 feet.
Use industry standard climbing methods in scaling trees, such as ladders and safety ropes.
Inspect, diagnose, and identify hazardous trees for annual tree condition assessment and corrective action determinations.
Perform rigging and removal techniques in topping, sectioning, and lifting of large or technical trees.
Perform mature tree pruning, hazard reduction pruning, and vista pruning.
Incorporate the techniques of Integrated Pest Management, (cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical) to control pest problems.
Operate a crane to remove trees and limbs and maneuver large trees for planting.
Operate equipment such as a stump grinder, brush chipper, or wood chipper.
Operate various motorized heavy equipment (e.g. winch, chipper, stake body, aerial lift, crew cab, and heavy duty forklifts).
Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections for: pickup trucks, winch trucks, chipper trucks, crane trucks, stakebody trucks, dump trucks, aerial lift trucks, crew cab trucks, and heavy duty forklifts.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You must possess and maintain a current Class B, (or higher) Commercial Driver's License .
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
This position is designated as an Emergency Essential, the employee and is required to work during hazardous weather conditions and emergencies.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Physical Demands: The incumbent frequently carries and/or moves objects of various sizes and shapes, up to 100 pounds, with assistance as required.

Incumbent is required to climb and work from rope rigging, ladders, and lift mechanisms. Work requires walking, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods of time. The incumbent may be required to work in cramped areas and awkward positions.

Working Conditions: The incumbent usually works outdoors, and frequently handles items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Is exposed to herbicides and other poisonous chemicals. The work involved in climbing is very demanding physically, and the incumbent is frequently exposed to serious injury from falls.

The nature of the work requires the incumbent to consistently work along park roadways where, throughout the day, there can be very high traffic volume and traffic speed in excess of 55 miles per hour (MPH). This poses immediate danger and requires the employee to be completely knowledgeable and skilled to operate and maneuver vehicles and equipment, and conduct proper traffic control operations.

Incumbent is required to work outside in all types of weather, and is subject to discomfort from heat, humidity, and cold: The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from chemicals, dirt, and medium generated from the tree pruning or removal process.

Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, burns, and broken bones. Incumbent is subject to noxious fumes, dust, and residue from use of power tools and chemical sprays. Incumbentis required to wear all appropriate and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing. The incumbent adheres to safety regulations and standards set by OSHA.

Other significant working conditions of this position are that the incumbent is designated as an Emergency Essential employee and may be required to work Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Also, may be required to work in other crews as needed and deemed necessary by the supervisor and will be subject to call back and emergency overtime.
