DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians.  The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.

This position is responsible for managing the eastern tree improvement operation to include seed production, seed processing, developmental breeding, and progeny testing. This position is also responsible for the establishment and maintenance of breeding orchards, seed orchards and clone banks.

This position oversees the statewide annual forest tree seed collection.   In addition, this position works closely with nursery managers at Claridge State Nursery and Linville River Nursery to ensure proper seed selection and adequate seed quantities are prepared for nursery operations.

Work may involve travel away from home for extended periods of time.  Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri, but some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.

NC Forest service has emergency response duties mandated by General Statues.  Wildfire and disaster/emergency assistance require year-round readiness, 24/7 and may require 7-day work weeks, extended hours, and on-call/emergency call-back availability.  Overnight travel sometimes required.

Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pest, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, intense heat, dust, smoke, and hazardous debris.  Occasional heavy lifting required.

Employee must operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training or employer sponsored training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 190 days of the date of hire.

Employee must obtain a North Carolina Public Pesticide Operator License within 90 days of hire.

  • Knowledge of native plants or trees.

  • Knowledge of plant or tree propagation.

  • Ability to supervise employees or contract labor.

  • Ability to effectively communicate.

  • Ability to prepare or execute work plans.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Experience in tree improvement, horticultural / greenhouse management, agricultural, or a combination of the above.

  • Excellent organizational skills, supervisory experience [with full-time, part-time, seasonal employees, contract labor, and / or inmate labor], verbal and written skills and the ability to communicate well to individuals and large audiences of varying backgrounds and education.

Associate s degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver s license required within 90 days of hire.Any employment offer may be less than the maximum of the range due to salary equity with similarly situated employees or the selected candidate's related education and experience.
