To perform ground based work in the trimming, maintenance and planting of city trees within the Urban Forest Division of the Parks and Community Services Department.
This class is an entry level classification and is distinguished from the Urban Forestry Technician by the performance of tree work which is ground based. Temporary part time employees in this position generally clean up brush and wood resulting from tree trimming and removal. They operate lowering lines and devices to help the Urban Forestry Technician in completing his/her work. Pruning is limited to operation of pole saws, pruners, or power saws from the ground.
Receives functional direction from a Urban Forestry Technician with overall supervision as well as daily task assignments from the Urban Forest Supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Clean up and remove brush that would result from tree trimming.
Trim and prune trees from the ground to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs and lights as well as to ensure the continued health of the tree.
Lay out safety cones and traffic control signs to delineate the safe working areas.
Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; clean and maintain climbing and trimming equipment.
Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as chippers, stump grinders, dump trucks, and power tools such as chain saws.
Remove fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
Plant, stake and maintain trees on city owned property and in the public right?of?way.
Respond to inquiries from the general public.
Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Perform general park maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties; assist with tree planting when necessary.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
The uses and purposes of general construction and maintenance tools and equipment.
Principles and practices of work safety.
Trim trees using pole saws, pruners from the ground.
Learn to perform semi?skilled tree trimming and maintenance work.
Learn to operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
Learn to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
One year of responsible experience performing duties in landscape work. Some knowledge of tree pruning and ground based tree equipment such as brush clippers and stump grinders is desirable.
Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
License or Certificate
Possession of a class C California driver's license.
Requires ability to stand, walk, climb or sit for prolonged periods of time and to operate motorized vehicles. Perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation. Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs. Ability to bend, twist, and reach.
Requires effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules.
Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
