SUMMARY

This position maintains, upgrades, and troubleshoots plant electrical problems. Work involves performing maintenance, upgrades, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical components and equipment that pertain to the City's water treatment processes, structures, and assets; repairing, maintaining, or replacing electrical equipment/components (breakers, starters, transformers); maintaining, connecting, and disconnecting electrical motors up to 480V; inspecting electric instrumentation and performing minor repairs. This position determines health life of critical electrical equipment and instruments and provides solutions to pending and/or post electrical component failures.

Salary:

$57,165.00 - $63,516.00 Commensurate with Experience

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains the electrical aspects of equipment critical to operations.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance activities by inspecting motors, pumps, fans, and electrical distribution equipment regularly; cleaning and checking/tightening connections in electrical equipment; and using a thermal testing device.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical malfunctions.
  • Repairs, maintains or replaces electrical equipment/components such as breakers, starters, transformers, and small motors.
  • Analyzes the mechanical and electrical condition of motors.
  • Installs/replaces conductors as necessary.
  • Must be able to properly install various forms of conduit, such as PVC-Coated, Rigid Galvanized Conduit, Rigid Aluminum Conduit, PVC-Schedule 40
  • Disconnects electrical connections on electrical equipment as necessary for maintenance, repair, or replacement.
  • Maintains facility lighting.
  • Maintains UPS batteries, changing as required
  • Makes additions, extensions, and or alterations in electrical systems by modifying wiring and hardware as directed by supervisor.
  • Performs calibrations on electrical & instrumentation devices (for example, types of calibrations will include but are not limited to: turbidity meters, chlorine analyzers, venturi meters, etc.)
  • Builds Control Panels as required.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Technical school education/electrical trade program, or associate degree from an accredited school, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work/industry/military/apprenticeship/job-specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job functions in the electrical maintenance field.
  • Must be available to work occasional overtime, subject to emergency call back, and perform on-call duty as required.
  • Must be able to be anywhere in Mecklenburg County within 60 minutes of your residence barring traffic issues.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Requires valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of electrical circuits with the ability to read and comprehend electrical schematics and construction diagrams.
  • Knowledge of electrical repair tools and devices.
  • Knowledge of electrical power monitoring instrumentation.
  • Skill in using electrical repair tools and devices.
  • Ability to obtain a City driving authorization.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is medium work and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/inspections, and walking. This position may require the following physical demands at any given time: Stand for long periods of time. Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Must also be able to bend or twist their body, climb ladders and scaffolds, kneel, stoop, distinguish sounds at normal speaking levels. Have ability to reach above head, use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects (up to 50lbs).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in an environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Requires working on-call as scheduled.
