VIEW JOBS 10/31/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-01-29T00:00 Patient Access Audit Registered Nurse - RN - FT - Access Center - INTEGRIS Corporate Position Summary: The Patient Access Services (PAS) Audit RN, using a combination of clinical experience, medical coding and billing knowledge, assumes responsibility for providing support to the PAS teams to review and monitor requests for procedure and diagnosis codes, verbal orders and other services as they relate to service authorization using various organizational review guidelines and criteria. Essential Functions: The PAS Audit RN manages the delivery and documentation of physician's verbal orders, service authorizations and coding requests: * Represents the organization by emphasizing professionalism throughout all communications with patients, patient's families, payers and internal staff * Acts (serves) as a liaison between clinicians, professional coders, the medical records department (HIM) and the patient financial services department answering questions or providing support as issues arise. * Provides PAS with assistance in resolving problems that require medical expertise, such as pre-certification process for all assigned outpatient areas, prior authorization and peer-to-peer reviews as needed. * Audits accounts to ensure HCPCS and CPT codes for both routine and complex procedures to ensure medical necessity. * Conducts regular and ad-hoc coding reviews of documentation compared to patient charges on a concurrent and retrospective basis to identify common errors, potential areas in need of improvements and/or education as well as procedural or communication breakdowns. * Investigates and resolves coding and prior authorization questions raised by PAS, providers and/or clinical personnel, including the assessment of appropriate modifiers and accuracy of services billed. * Reports coding deficiencies and trends to the appropriate department leadership * Ensures that insurance verifications are completed as needed for all high-dollar outpatient tests and surgical procedures as assigned * Reviews service authorizations obtained, and pre-billed claims as needed to ensure they align with the procedures performed. * Consults with ordering providers and patients when insurance authorizations are not secured at least 24 hours prior to scheduled services to determine if the visit will be rescheduled, cancelled or performed (following PAS financial clearance guidelines). * Documents all activities and outcomes regarding case communication, including calls made and received in Epic per protocol * Collaborates with the denials management team in identifying root causes of re-occurring denials as they relate to documentation and coding processes, obtaining clinical staff support and cooperation in denial prevention initiatives as well as assisting in resolving denials. * Maintains up-to-date knowledge and provides guidance on requirements set forth by CMS, other party payer requirements, the American Hospital Association Official Coding Guidelines and American Medical Association's CPT guidelines. Accountability: Reports to the appropriate manager, director, or vice president.
