Travel and Culture Editor, Southern Living
Producing travel content for both print and digital platforms while helping to expand Travel & Culture's network of freelance writers, build relationships within the travel industry, and support advertising initiatives as needed.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling and for the food, culture, and people of the South. He or she should have extensive knowledge of the region, stay ahead of trends, and always have a finger on the pulse of what is new and happening in the South.
The Travel & Culture Editor must be a strong writer (both long and short form), a skilled interviewer, and an effective researcherboth online and in the field. Must be able to write compelling copy for print and digital, whether reporting on location or distance reporting, and must coordinate effectively with Copy/Art/Production to meet all deadlines. Strong editing skills a plus.
The Travel & Culture Editor will be expected to travel extensively, both to report stories and to attend industry conferences and events.
He or she must be able to work efficiently, collaboratively, and professionally with a tightknit staff in a dynamic environment.
Essential Job Functions
Produce content for both print and digital platforms: pitch and concept story ideas; travel, report, and write for print; distance report, write, and produce for digital; ensure accuracy of travel content; coordinate with Copy/Art/Production to communicate story concepts, identify visuals, produce layouts, and meet deadlines; fit layouts for stories the Travel Editor writes or assigns.
Help build a solid and diverse network of freelance writers, especially in high-circulation states, as well as destinations that are more expensive to reach from Birmingham; coordinate with freelancers to ensure adherence to deadlines.
Represent Southern Living at industry conferences and events; support Advertising by meeting with travel destinations or appearing at events.
Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, creative writing or related field.
Minimum 3 years' professional experience as a writer with proven ability to deliver a compelling narrative in a distinctive voice; extensive knowledge of Southern food and culture, with particular interest in Southern foodways. Strong editing skills preferred.
