UW's Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Research Study Coordinator Lead, assisting with Trauma clinical research projects in the Trauma, Burn & Critical Care Division which is part of the UW School of Medicine.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Trauma Research Study Coordinator Lead will coordinate work assignments for research personnel engaged in performing a variety of duties for the Trauma, Burn, & Critical Care Division research studies involving human subjects, including enrolling and consenting patients into the studies, interfacing patients and their families as well as other research personnel. The successful candidate will be skilled at identifying subject populations; able to develop forms, questionnaires and databases for collecting and summarizing observations and data able to; enroll and consent subjects in complex clinical trials. They will also assist with complex study start-up activities.

The Research Study Coordinator Lead manages, under the guidance of the Research Nurse Supervisor, is responsible for training new employees, assigning and schedule work shifts, and managing a group of around 10 research study assistants.

This 1.0 FTE position reports to the Research Nurse Supervisor. Major position duties are:

Research Project Coordination = 50%

Research Study Assistant Supervision = 50%

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Research Project Coordination = 50%

Complete case report forms

Identify appropriate subjects for participation and determine eligibility for study inclusion

Complete screening, recruiting, consenting, enrolling, and tracking of study participants in a timely and appropriate manner utilizing HIPAA regulations, institutional confidentiality policies, and ethical principles of clinical research for studies, within Harborview Medical Center

Complete collection, preparation and/or shipment of specimens (blood and tissue) for laboratory analysis according to federal regulations

Develop databases that are required for data input on multiple research studies

Obtain, process, store, and ship subject biological samples

Review medical records of inpatient and discharged patients:

Abstract data

Ensure entry of data in a computerized database; extracting technical, medical, and/or behavioral information from institution or clinical records

Research Study Assistant Direct Supervision = 50%

Interview, hire, supervise, and train all newly employed Research Study Assistants

Maintain all training records and ensure all Research Assistants are current with required training

Train all Research Study Assistants on required lab processing

Train all Research Study Assistants on study-specific procedures including but not limited to screening, consenting, blood processing, data collection, and survey administration

Manage schedule for research assistants to ensure coverage 24/7 for research projects

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in a relevant academic area AND two years of experience coordinating the operations of clinical, biomedical, or behavioral research studies involving human subject OR equivalent education/experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of research rules and regulations

Demonstrated diplomacy with physicians and other medical staff

Substantial understanding of medical terminology

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Ability to effectively communicate verbally and written

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Redcap development

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience supervising more junior staff

Experience in industry-sponsored research in a medical setting

Training and/or knowledge in ethical conduct of research with human subjects and IRB requirements

Ability to work with a diverse group of people and proven communication skills with physicians, colleagues, families, patients, and supervisees

Prior experience with enrollment, consent forms, and policy/procedures for clinical trials

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ability to be on-call for specific clinical trials

Handling laboratory specimens, including blood

On-site position with occasional telework possible
