The Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) Outpatient (OP) Clinical Psychologist will join a growing multidisciplinary team of behavioral health specialists who provide trauma-informed assessment, psychotherapy and assertive case management services to survivors of trauma and violent crime. This unique program, the first of its kind in the state, creates a continuum of care for psychological recovery starting at the bedside in Henry Ford Hospital's Level I Trauma Center with a seamless transition of care to the OP TRC at no cost to survivors.

In addition to the direct provision of clinical services, the senior clinician will also provide clinical supervision, consultation and training to staff and trainees related to trauma-informed evidence-based psychological interventions. The clinician will also be involved in program development. Clinical interactions will take place primarily in an ambulatory clinic setting, with virtual, home and community visit options provided. Typical patient populations receiving TRC services include: survivors of interpersonal violence, motor vehicle accidents, sexual assault/domestic violence, industrial accidents, and family members of survivors.

In addition to clinical duties, the TRC OP Clinical Psychologist will work collaboratively with the Director of Trauma and Acute Care Surgical Psychology Services (Director) to ensure that all mental health procedures meet the needs of trauma survivors and standards for care. The incumbent will also work with the TRC Clinical Program Manager to determine clinic flow, scheduling and staff educational needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical:

o Conducts clinical intakes for new clients using a trauma-informed approach and identifies service needs when appropriate. Assessment includes identifying presenting problems, psychosocial history, mental status exam, risk assessment and DSM-5 diagnoses.

o Clinical interventions include: short-term trauma-informed evidence based individual and group psychotherapy, as needed crisis intervention, comprehensive case management, multidisciplinary collaboration with other health care providers, as well as referral and accompaniment to community services when appropriate with support and collaboration from treatment team.

o May visit patient at home and/or in the community for the purpose of outreach and follow-up if the patient is unable to attend regularly scheduled in office appointments.

o Caseloads typically consist of complex clients, all of whom have histories of exposure to trauma, including: acute and chronic physical and sexual abuse, interpersonal violence (e.g., sexual assault, physical assault, domestic violence, gunshot wounds), political torture, and immigration trauma. Many clients also have concomitant medical and psychosocial concerns, including comorbid substance use.

o Provides consultation to multidisciplinary treatment team related to the psychosocial sequelae of trauma, substance use, psychiatric illness and chronic medical concerns.

o Utilizes knowledge of the mental health, medical, and community resources in Detroit/Wayne County and maintains familiarity with new programs.

o Develops a comprehensive treatment and service plan for each client, integrating knowledge from a wide range of human service resources.

o Facilitates coordination of services among various agencies; advocates for and links clients to needed services. Helps clients to gain eligibility for Social Security Disability, Crime Victim Compensation, and other socioeconomic support resources.

  • Supervision, Training, Program Development:

o Provides clinical and administrative supervision to clinical staff and trainees.

o Takes the lead in preparing, planning and conducting in-service trainings and case conferences.

o Assists in organizing and co-teaching a didactic Trauma Seminar on the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic trauma in underserved populations, using evidence-based practices.

o Conducts community presentations on the assessment and treatment of trauma.

o Takes the lead in working with the Director on program development and implementing innovative models of care.

  • Record Keeping and Other Duties:

o Maintains client records according to Michigan, City, County, and System requirements.

o Records data in client's chart according to JCAHO standards.

o Meets program productivity standards.

o Assists in processing quality improvement requests.

o Assists with data collection for program evaluation and research purposes; works collaboratively with the TRC research team.

o Attends staff meetings and other assigned meetings, participates in training sessions.

o Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education:

Requires a fully licensed, doctoral prepared, clinical psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.)

Pre-doctoral internship and Doctoral Program must have been APA accredited

Knowledge and Relevant Experience:

A minimum of one year experience in an ambulatory care setting preferred (including during training).

Must have training/specialization with trauma informed care/trauma populations.

Must possess effective writing, communication, and analytical skills.

Research design and grant writing experience preferred.

Programmatic planning experience preferred.
