Position Summary:

The Transporter is responsible for the transportation of patients within the hospital setting, dispatching items to various departments, assisting in repositioning patients, and knowledge of wheelchair and stretcher use. Performs customer service functions by receiving and greeting patients, welcoming and transporting them appropriately. Maintains patient safety through attention to detail, equipment safety checks, adherence to department policies, and effective communication with peers and providers. Assists with patient care needs.

  • Transports supplies and equipment as needed.

  • Displays professional, engaging conduct and excellent customer service skills; Utilizes A.I.D.E.T.

  • Confirms patient identification verbally using patient identifiers, ID band, etc.

  • Signs patient out/in at nursing unit when transporting.

  • Collaborates with responsible RN/LVN on completion of procedures, i.e., traction set-up, patient

positioning and oxygen hook-up.

  • Consciously makes consistent observation of patient condition, IV, Imed malfunction during transport to and from multiple areas of the hospital and promptly reports to appropriate testing areas or nursing personnel.

  • Reports promptly any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients and unusual incidents.

  • Remains flexible; accepts new, temporary, or special assignments as directed. Supports other areas as needed.

  • Utilizes standard precautions appropriately.

  • Makes rounds to each unit at least once every two hours; gathers and returns supplies to proper areas.

  • Use ordinary care in assisting patients with personal belongings.

  • Checks for heplock on discharged patients.

  • Performs room check on discharges.

  • Maintains work area in regard to cleanliness, organization and adequate stock levels.

  • Reports malfunctioning transportation equipment to appropriate service department.

  • Demonstrates a willingness to follow the chain of command, regularly channels suggestions, criticisms and complaints to the appropriate person.

  • Adheres to CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial policies, including but not limited to "CHI Values & Ethics at Work", HIPPA, PHI, ePHI, Privacy Rule, and confidentiality.

  • Maintains safe work habits; adheres to safety rules; immediately reports any unsafe condition; immediately reports any incident / injury.

  • Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization.

  • Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level

Required: High School Diploma/GED

Licensure/Certification

BLS certification (through an approved AHA program).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong interpersonal skills; ability to relate well to diverse groups.

Excellent Communication Skills

Excellent Customer Service Skills.
