Educational Assistants

This position is responsible for assisting with the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and all school-related events. Responsible for assisting students on/off bus and ensuring the student's safety at all times. Assists assigned driver with loading/unloading wheelchair bound students in bus designed for handicap student transportation. Position is required to monitor student behavior while on the bus and document any incidents of policy violations, etc.



  • High school diploma or G.E.D.


Essential Functions:

  • Identifies eligible riders

  • Seats riders

  • Interprets bus rules

  • Maintains order and discipline

  • Assists the driver in evacuation of bus during an emergency

  • Assists a sub driver in route and stop locations

  • For busses that carry Multiple Handicapped or Orthopedic Handicapped students, the assistant must do the following:

.. Position children in their seat

.. Secure latch connection on seat belts or harnesses

.. Check wheel chair tie downs to be sure they are secure

.. Turn off electric wheel chairs for transport

.. Observe condition of child while on bus

.. Keep students from interacting in a non-positive manner

.. Continually monitors condition of students for health emergency

.. Continually monitors students to be sure they are secure in their seat or wheel chair

.. Assists sub driver in identifying possible emergency situations for a child

.. After training-may assist driver in tying down wheel chairs and in lift operation

  • For busses that carry Severe Behavior (SBH)/Emotionally Disturbed (ED) Students, the assistant must do the following:

.. Determine what section of the bus the monitor is responsible for

.. Travel main aisle of bus to monitor behavior of students

.. Continually monitor student behavior and require them to remain seated

.. De-escalate a potentially volatile behavior situation

.. May be required to fill out a Bus Incident Report for submission to the school

  • Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation

  • Maintains respect for confidential information

  • Promotes good safety practices and procedures

  • Performs related work as required


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to cope with stressful situations as related to preschool and special needs children

  • Ability to accurately complete bus incident reports and other required documentation

  • Ability to promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation

  • Ability to maintains respect for confidential information

  • Ability to promotes good safety practices and procedures

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations


Equipment Operated:

  • After training--may be required to assist driver with wheelchair tie downs and lifts

  • Seat belt latches

  • Electric wheelchair on and off mechanism

  • Bus safety door

  • Orthopedic equipment used while student is entering, exiting, or on bus

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Frequently required to lift students in and out of equipment

  • Frequent exposure to body fluids

  • Occasionally required to restrain students

  • Occasional interaction among unruly children

  • Occasional exposure to blood and tissue

  • Frequent and regular requirement to lift, stand, walk, talk, hear, see

  • Occasionally required to fill out reports

This position works on an as-needed basis with no regularly assigned schedule and/or guarantee of a minimum number of scheduled hours per week.

Our reception desk is the central hub of our building and the first stop for all visitors, so the receptionist position is critical to ensuring that visitors to the building have an overwhelmingly positive experience. Receptionist is a cheerful, professional individual to answer the door and phone and manage the guest experience. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Percentage of Time 40% 1. Guest Experience Management: Answer the front door politely and professionally. Alert the appropriate staff member via phone that their meeting has arrived. The supervisor will train this individual on our standard office protocol. 30% 2. Answer Main Phone Line: Answer the main phone line in a consistent and polite manner. Learn the various functions performed by each staff member and be able to utilize the phone system to transfer the call to the appropriate staff member. Opportunities will be available for this individual to meet with each staff member to learn about how the organization functions. In addition, this individual will receive information related to a limited scope of frequently asked questions and will be expected to answer these questions utilizing provided materials. 20% 3. General Office Assistance: Assist with volume copying, mailings, and sorting as needed. This work will be explained and coordinated by the supervisor and will need to be done between answering the phone and door. The front desk area is expected to be presentable even in the midst of working on a mailing or sorting task. 10% 4. Special Projects: Because of the nature of our organization, there are special projects that arise which require 'all hands on deck'. We expect that this individual will embrace our team atmosphere and help as needed when special events or projects could benefit from their assistance. These projects often highlight the organization's involvement in the community and provide an opportunity to learn about how our United Way plays a role in moving Summit County forward. JOB RELATIONSHIPS WITH: All internal staff of United Way of Summit County and all guests to the building. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * High School Diploma or equivalent. * Basic understanding of MS Office products. * Flexible schedule between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. to accommodate business needs. Schedule will be assigned at least two weeks in advance. Throughout 5 business days, hours will average 5.5 hours per day, not to exceed 29.75 hours per week. * Interest in the improvement of the Summit County community. COMPETENCIES: * Polite and cheerful communication skills. * Great attitude about coming to work each day. * Professional presentation. * Detail oriented. * Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments/responsibilities. * Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. * Strong verbal communication skills. * Commitment to excellence and passion for the mission of United Way of Summit County.
