Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $45,420 - GN06

Employee hired in this position will perform a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of roads & roadside features in Halifax County. Work to include, but not limited to: installation of traffic & erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand & power tools, clearing of right of way, repairing pavements, pipe installation or other drainage tasks.
Emergency response including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. On a regular and recurring basis, employees operate one piece of Category C equipment, such as a bulldozer in clearing and grubbing operations, a motor-grader for ditching and stabilizing unpaved roads, or operating a road widening machine placing asphalt at specified rates as part of a paving crew. Work may also include the operation of a backhoe to install pipe.
The positions are located in Halifax County Maintenance Unit. Applications must be received no later than 5:00 pm on the closing date of the posting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, skid steer or sweeper
Knowledge of Advanced Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations
Experience leading subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.
Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time.
Work may include lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Position is subject to emergency call back. Class A CDL Permit required within 60 days of employment; Class A CDL License required within 90 days of employment. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol.
Must possess a valid driver's license. Safety toe footwear required. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Requirements Possession of a current Commercial Driver s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.
