This position is for a Transportation Worker II located in the Division 11 Traffic Services Department in Wilkes County. Employee will be primarily associated with the sign crew; but could possibly work on a paint marking or pre-line/sight distance crew on an as needed basis.
Employee in this position will install and maintain signs of all types including interstate signs requiring operation of a 5-ton utility crane and an interstate aerial crane with work platform. Additional duties include inventorying and tracking quantities of used materials, performing manual labor tasks, inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, participating in snow and ice removal, possible sign design, layout, and fabrication; and any other duties as assigned. Work may include supervision of an employee or groups of employees and training employees how to properly coordinate sign installation or replacement operations.
Employee in this position is subject to occasional emergency duties and will be exposed to all types of weather and extreme temperature conditions. Employee must be able to traverse and work on uneven surfaces and slopes.

Experience operating a sign truck with attachments
Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
Knowledge of sign design, layout, and fabrication
Knowledge of maintaining the Sign Inventory
Additional Expectations:
The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required. Employee will be responsible to evaluate sign condition(s) and night-time retro-reflectivity; and will be scheduled to work extended hours during the work week.
This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, snow and ice removal operations, and overtime as needed. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position performs manual labor tasks for extended periods of time in extreme temperatures and uneven terrain.
Visual acuity is required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug screening is required for this position.
As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.
High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
