Position Summary:

Under general supervision, assists school staff in maintaining the accuracy of the TIMS student database. Creates bus runs/routes. Performs TIMS computer maintenance and updates MARIS.

Essential Job Functions:

Obtain and load student data from Power School to carry out the functions of the TIMS computer routing system. Researches, corrects and re-inputs all rejected student information obtained from Power School.

Assists schools in optimizing unique or difficult bus runs. Quality controls the assignment of all transported students to bus stops to ensure students are authorized to ride buses, an essential action to ensure student coverage under North Carolina state tort liability, especially in the event of student injury in a school bus accident. Quality controls the bus runs prepared by schools to ensure bus stops and bus runs are correctly established in accordance with North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 16, Public Education, Chapter 6. This in turn ensures correct reports are submitted to the state, which accurately reflect Transportation Department efficiency and ultimately, is a key factor in determining state funding allocations.

Generates plotted maps and bus run directions for each bus run. Generates, through use of TIMS and alternate software (EXCEL, for example) state reports for school bus drivers agreement time.

Must obtain/maintain TIMS MARIS certification to make changes to the TIMS mapping system to ensure efficient bus runs/route scheduling and system recognition of state and non-state maintained roads so the state tort liability coverage can be extended to those runs. Assists the TIMS Coordinator in the production of the school bus runs/route information. Also runs TIMS maintenance programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Training:

Must have a high school diploma. Prior training and experience with Microsoft operating systems are necessary.

Must possess a solid working knowledge of computers, printers, plotters, database management and graphic software applications. Good organizational, communication and analytical skills are essential. Knowledge of state and local statutes, policies and procedures in school bus transportation is also essential.

Must obtain and maintain MARIS and MARIS update certification. Experience with EXCEL and other spreadsheet software is essential.

Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, forms, charts, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Judgement: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of state and local laws, regulations and guidelines regarding bus routes, stops and driver requirements. Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, hazards and related safety precautions.

Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices relating to motivation, delegation and communication. General knowledge of the use of computers for recordkeeping and report generation. Ability to establish and maintain accurate and organized records and compile reports.

Ability to perform arithmetical calculations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students and drivers.
