Job Description and Duties

Caltrans District 4 (San Francisco Bay Area) Land Surveys is looking for hard-working, productive and motivated persons with a strong sense of commitment to join our Office!

Our dynamic team performs transportation surveying including stationary and mobile LiDar scanning, geodetic control work, data extraction, boundary resolution and mapping, drone data collection, geospatial analysis and more! We work throughout the broad spectrum of wonders and challenges of the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano and Contra Costa). Based on annual workload, delivery commitments, and seasonal needs, from time-to-time assignments may vary in office and field environments.

Travel and overtime may be required. Transportation Surveyors assigned to a work location in Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco counties receive a geographic pay differential.

Working Conditions

Field physical requirements include: Use of heavy-duty work clothes and safety boots while performing a variety of heavy physical labor tasks, including:

Using cutting tools to clear brush, which can be dense and can include poison oak; lifting and swinging a sledge hammer weighing up to 20 pounds to place stakes, monuments, hubs and tack and to break apart material; lifting and transporting equipment and/or materiel weighing up to 60 pounds; extensive walking, often over steep and uneven terrain while transporting stakes, supplies, and equipment. Incumbent is required to travel to work locations; stay at remote accommodations for multi-day assignments; work overtime or at night, as required. Permission for the incumbent to use leave may be reasonably restricted or withheld.

Incumbent may be required to rotate or transfer to other positions, work assignments and/or work locations within the District 4 Office of Land Surveys, according to business needs as determined by management. The rotational/transfer position shall have duties consistent with this classification. Telework may be considered. Any Telework work environment will be the subject of a separate agreement.

Your normal working hours will be set sometime between 6:00 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. Incumbent is required to maintain a valid driver's license within California.

Must drive a vehicle to conduct normal work activities in all kinds of settings and conditions, including heavy freeway or highway traffic and in off-road areas; and work at locations which may expose the Incumbent to adverse conditions including, but not limited to: Rough, steep and/or overgrown terrain; great heights; allergen-producing vegetation including poison oak; insect and reptile bites and/or stings; loud noises; dust; and chemicals; very noisy conditions; extreme weather conditions including hot, cold, wet, dusty and dirty environments. Incumbent must also be tolerant of working within very close range of high-speed traffic and heavy equipment.

This position may be eligible for telework. If it is, the amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.

Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid Professional Land Surveying License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required for Range D appointment .
