Primary Purpose:

Responsible for the activities involved in the efficient operation of transportation. Supervise truck drivers, administrative support personnel and fleet maintenance persons associated with the transportation function.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the daily safe, efficient, legal and economical operation of all transportation activities

  • Support sales efforts consistent with corporate and regulatory compliance, health, safety and environmental affairs

  • Implement and manage branch regulatory compliance program; CFR 49

  • Responsible for all branch transportation related maintenance/housekeeping of buildings, equipment and fleet

  • Assist with transportation budgets and operating plans in coordination with sales and branch management

  • Assist in salary planning for assigned personnel

  • Responsible for meeting customer delivery requirements in a cost effective manner.

  • Manage salary plan, personnel development, hiring, promoting and termination within the transportation/dispatch function

  • Properly manage the transportation function through UVX2000 System

  • Maintain/Keep current all truck licensing and permits

  • Answer shipping office phones, radio and may back-up other shipping and receiving clerks

Specialized Knowledge/Skills:

  • Demonstrated skills required in previous job

  • Strong interpersonal skills in coaching and team building with all levels of people in the organization

  • Strong analytical skills with experience in use of performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.

  • Experience with transportation management system solutions.

  • High level of decision-making ability, balancing customers needs and company objectives

  • Strong organization skills with the ability to handle diverse and significant workload

  • Pro-actively removes barriers preventing employee from succeeding

  • Recognizes those who sacrifice for the good of the organization

  • Ability to communicate well with agencies and public having interest in our organization

  • Hold CDL with appropriate endorsements and be able to operate all transportation equipment (Preferred)

  • Understanding of UVX2000 (Preferred), PC skills and experience using MS Word and Excel

  • Understanding of the Univar USA business processes and procedure

  • Detail oriented with strong phone skills necessary for problem resolution & customer service


  • In-depth knowledge of chemical distribution facility operation

  • 3-5 years experience in transportation or operations

  • Strong computer, verbal and written communications skills

  • Working knowledge of governmental requirements related to the chemical industry; i.e. OSHA, EPA, RCRA, DOT, etc. or demonstrated ability to attain such knowledge

  • The ability to read, write, count, understand and speak English

  • Experience shipping and receiving products using a computer inventory system

  • Some product knowledge, chemical industry background and/or chemistry classes a plus

Assists with monitoring Department of Transportation (DOT) logs, ensures drivers are in compliance with all DOT and OpCo regulations, and coordinates the tracking of all relevant information on drivers. Functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and performs any duty assigned to best serve the company. Supervises associates to include, but not limited to: staffing, training, coaching, performance management and problem resolution. Assists in scheduling as well as ensuring deliveries and pickups are made in a timely manner. Rides with drivers for training and/or evaluation purposes. Assists Transportation/Operations Manager with overall day-to-day administration of transportation and delivery functions, which may include calculating driver payroll, reviewing driver trip logs and expense reports, identifying and resolving problems, and ensuring that drivers are compliant with DOT and OpCo regulations. Operates computer keyboard to enter and access data in automated fleet management system. Ensures drivers fulfill duties safely by monitoring vehicle safety, safe usage of ramps and handcarts, seat and weight belt use, and safe lifting and product-handling practices. May attend quarterly safety meetings. Coordinates tracking of all relevant information on drivers, such as license status, traffic tickets, accidents and other risk and safety-related data. Ensures accurate completion of all delivery and driver-related paperwork including invoices, cash receipts, collection register, trip reports, fuel tickets, deposit slips, DOT logs, Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR), driver qualification files and accident reporting. Ensures maintenance of all trucks, tractors and trailers through detailed review of post-trip inspections Works in conjunction with Transportation or Operations Manager to minimize operating expenses and to ensure all deliveries are efficiently routed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Class A CDL is required for this position NOTE; RELOCATION IS NOT OFFERED FOR THIS POSITION Required Education: High School Diplomna/GED or Equivalent Experience Required Experience: 2-4 Years experience with a combination of DOT delivery driver, transportation supervision and/or DOT safety/compliance work experience Basic to intermediate computer skills to include MS Office Suite and Outlook. Strong interpersonal skills to include interviewing, coaching and presentation skills. Preferred Qualifications Preferred Education: Associates/2 year technical in Operations management, logistics, business management or related field. Preferred Experience: 4-6 years with a combination of DOT delivery driver, transportation supervisor and/or DOT safety/compliance work experience. Previous delivery experience in the foodservice/beverage industry highly desired Intermediate to advanced computer skills including experience with PeopleNet, DriveCam, and/or PODS.
