Description of Work
Position located in the Harnett County Maintenance Unit (Lillington) and will supervise activities of one or more crews in work related to Roadway Maintenance. Duties typically consist of planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; monitor expenditures; maintain work records, time sheets, job reports and inventory records; counsel, discipline and train employees; conduct performance reviews, interview and recommend hiring staff.
Employee will ensure equipment is maintained and serviced as required. Investigate public inquiries/complaints and recommend solutions. Determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments.
Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of project work. Assignments are normally received in the form of written or verbal work orders, which usually indicate the general nature of the task. Employee is expected to independently perform routine work.
New or unusual assignments may be accompanied by more detailed instructions. Work is performed under general supervision and may be reviewed and inspected in progress or upon completion. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Possess Windows-based computer knowledge with experience in Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to maintain and prioritize work tasks; making independent decisions without direct supervision; developing timelines and objectives for projects assigned to the Unit.
Possess thorough understanding of the programs, concepts and practices performed within a Maintenance unit. Promote safe work environment. Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, co-workers, contractor's and general public.
Direct, assist and train sub-ordinate employees. Maintain accurate records of work accomplished. Ability to work in extreme temperatures and uneven terrain conditions for extended periods of time.
Ability to work in emergency situations and inclimate weather. Safety toe footwear is required.
Operate State-owned vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Working knowledge of standard maintenance procedures
Experience in planning and organizing work
Experience in filling out daily work sheets that documents personnel, equipment and location worked
Experience in calculating quantities of material needed for work crews to perform daily functions
Experience in supervising a crew or crews
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
