The Transportation Specialist is a full-time position with day time hours. Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30am to 3:30pm. Start and end times can be flexible.

Job Summary:

The Transportation Specialist assists Mankato locations with minor vehicle repairs, keep required vehicle documents up to date, and monitor overall vehicle condition. This position is responsible for department cell phone, assisting with vehicle breakdowns and special transportation needs and acts as backup to drive routes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Mankato locations with minor vehicle repairs, keep required vehicle documents up to date, and monitor overall vehicle condition.

  • Responsible for Department cell phone, assisting with vehicle breakdowns and special transportation needs.

  • Deliver vehicles back and forth for service as needed.

  • Supervise safety checks to assure they are being completed as scheduled.

  • Assist Transportation Manager with maintenance of pool vehicles.

  • Assist Transportation Manager with Driver, CDL and DOT Training.

  • Check pool vehicles daily for fuel and service needs. Fuel vehicles if needed.

  • Assist Transportation Manager with annual DOT inspections and wheelchair lift inspections.

  • Assist Transportation Manager with 5310 grant vehicle preparedness and inspections

  • Track maintenance and update electronic maintenance records as vehicles go in for service and repairs.

  • On-call to drive all routes as needed.

  • Recommend and implement program improvements and policy changes to improve services.

  • Foster a safe and healthy work environment by following all safety practices and procedures.

  • Secure confidential information to protect staff, clients and proprietary knowledge.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement, reliable transportation and a good driving record.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent with four years of related work experience.

  • Strong problem solving, multi-tasking and organizational skills.

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, verbal/written communication skills.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of computer based office software.

  • Clear a MN Department of Human Services background check and physical exam to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands of the job.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal transportation laws.

Snow and Ice * Maintains roadways for snow and ice control * Prepares and inspects winter equipment * Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup * Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals * Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes * Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management * Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with: * A combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas: contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering. OR * A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts). * Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
