Purpose Statement:
The job of Transportation Route Manager is done for the purpose/s of providing day-to-day oversite of the Transportation Department drivers including training, scheduling and routing in assigned areas; preparing and adjusting bus routes; supervising assigned department staff; assisting individuals in the performance of their functions; and resolving and/or recommending solutions to incidents, complaints and/or accidents. This job reports to Assistant Supervisor of Transportation
Essential Functions:
Assesses incidents, safety issues, violations complaints and/or accidents as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
Assists in personnel functions as assigned (e.g. hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, time keeping, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining necessary staffing, enhancing productivity of staff and ensuring necessary department/program outcomes are achieved.
Develops and adjusts transportation routes and schedules in assigned areas (e.g. stops, time of pick-up and delivery, road conditions, special education issues, etc) for the purpose of ensuring that District transportation needs are met and that assigned department processes meet all safety and legal regulations.
Investigates accidents, incidents, violations, etc. in assigned areas for the purpose of ensuring safety and legal compliance and/or reporting findings to others as needed.
Manages the dispatching of district bus routes in assigned areas for the purpose of ensuring effective and efficient student transportation services while maintaining all legal and safety regulations.
Prepares variety of reports and related documents in a variety of formats (e.g. accidents, annual reports, employee records, letters, memos, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
Presents at and/or participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
Procures office supplies and materials for the purpose of implementing procedures to maintain compliance with current legal requirements.
Responds to a variety of district and non-district parties (e.g. department and District staff, other school districts, parents, vendors, regulatory agencies, etc.) for the purpose of receiving / conveying information and/or directing activities as needed and/or assigned.
Schedules various activities as needed and/or assigned (e.g. appointments, meetings, reservations, accommodations, etc.) for the purpose of coordinating department activities and conforming to administrative, District state and/or federal requirements.
Supervises transportation employees in assigned areas for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.
Other Functions:
Performs the functions of a school bus driver as may be required for the purpose of ensuring coverage of routes and providing support (snow day, weekend, etc.) as needed.
Performs other related duties, as assigned, (e.g. incoming/outgoing mail, payments, correspondence, incoming calls, accident reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in transportation departments, planning and managing projects, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: transportation scheduling, safety practices and procedures, operating knowledge of a school bus, safety precautions related to transportation, occupational hazards, school bus operation rules and regulations, etc.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.
Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with a variety of individuals and/or groups, working with a variety of data, communicating with district and public individuals, problem solving, interpretation of regulations and guidelines and supervising others.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the Organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
