Job Summary: The Transportation Research Economist analyzes the costs, benefits, and economic impacts of research projects.

Produces written reports, memoranda, and spreadsheet models.

Manages work on short- and long-term projects.

Additional Department Summary: The Transportation Research Economist will conduct research on different transportation-related topics including transportation policy, safety, mobility, funding, etc. for presentations at conferences, publications in peer-reviewed journals, development of research reports, and other engagements. Lead or support research projects and collaborate on interdisciplinary research teams.

Analyze the costs, benefits, and economic impacts of transportation projects.

Produce written reports, memoranda, and spreadsheet models.

Manage work on short- and long-term projects. Collaborate with state and local governmental and transportation agencies such as the Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama League of Municipalities, transportation planning organizations, the City of Tuscaloosa, and others. Engage in proposal and research grant writing processes. Produce high-impact scholarly products (e.g., journal article sand conference presentations) on transportation-related topics.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in Economics plus a minimum of 3 years of experience conducting and publishing transportation policy research.

Skills and Knowledge: Experience in transportation cost-benefit analysis and economic impact analysis.

Experience in project leading and managing transportation-related projects. Experience managing databases, performing data collection and analysis, and developing econometric and statistical modeling using statistical analysis software such as R, SAS, Stata, Matlab, etc.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) software.

Experience in survey design and familiarity with web-based survey software (such as Qualtrics). Track record of publishing in peer-reviewed research articles in transportation-related journals. Track record of presenting peer-reviewed research at transportation-related conferences.
