Title: Transportation Planner

Type: Full-Time

Location: Seattle, WA. Travel throughout the United States and Canada may comprise up to 10% of time.

Program Description: The employee commute team manages transportation planning and transportation demand management (TDM) programs for operations facilities across North America for a large corporate client. The team is dedicated to providing employees with a variety of transportation options that reduce their reliance on driving alone.

Position Description: The Transportation Planner will work closely with the Program Manager and other stakeholders to improve transit access and develop a variety of TDM programs for site-level employees. Transportation Planners work directly with their assigned portfolio of sites to improve public transit, coordinate private shuttles, facilitate carpooling and other commute options, ensure compliance with all air quality regulations, host marketing and engagement events, and develop relationships with a variety of stakeholders in order to strengthen transportation alternatives for sites in their region.

Position Responsibilities:

Program Development & Implementation

  • Lead conversations with transit agencies, TMAs, public officials and internal stakeholders to identify, fund and implement transit improvements

  • Implement customized TDM programs. Program elements may include rideshare, transit, ride-hail, walking, bicycling, shuttles, and employee engagement programs

  • Partner with Legal department to draft and negotiate transportation-related contracts

  • Analyze workplace data (shift schedule, headcount, home zip code, etc.) to inform decision-making process

  • Research TDM best practices to identify and implement improved processes and pilot programs

  • Source and manage third-party shuttle service

  • Manage commute-related air quality compliance programs, including data collection, employee surveys, and reporting

  • Work with contractors and outside subject matter experts on projects related to new site selection, traffic management planning, and infrastructure modification

Employee Engagement

  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and host on-site transportation fairs and tabling events to engage and educate employees on their commute options

  • Manage commute-related subsidies and incentives

  • Field program-related inquiries from ground-level employees and site-level management

Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, with a wide range of stakeholders including management, ground-level associates, Human Resources and external stakeholders

  • Proactively develop relationships with area transportation organizations, compliance jurisdictions, TMAs, and other public agencies

  • Meet onsite with site-level leaders in order to build relationships, communicate program requirements, and develop positive ongoing working relationships

Required Experience and Attributes:

  • Enthusiasm for / interest in sustainable transportation

  • Desire to travel up to 10% of time

  • BA/BS in urban planning, real estate, geography, business, sustainability, or a related field

  • 3-5 years of experience, not including internships or coursework, working in transportation demand management or related field where relevant skills can be demonstrated

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and pro-actively manage workload and time

  • Experience coordinating outreach and marketing events

  • Experience driving projects and programs forward with limited supervision

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills (writing sample will be requested)

  • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to lead short but effective meetings

  • Proficiency using MS Office Suite

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire for continuous improvement

Desired Experience and Attributes:

  • Advanced degree in urban planning, real estate, geography, business, sustainability, or a related field

  • Data collection, analysis, and reporting skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel

  • Proficiency using ArcGIS

Position Overview: SDOT's Project Development Division is looking to hire a talented Senior Transportation Planner who will initiate, execute and complete complex, highly visible multimodal projects and programs, working across multiple disciplines, sections and agencies, and serve as the liaison for the Pedestrian Advisory Board. The position will report to the Pedestrian & Neighborhood Projects Manager. Job Responsibilities: * Coordinate and participate in the selection, planning, scope development, conceptual design and outreach for pedestrian projects including sidewalks, ADA improvements; signal improvements and channelization improvements. * Manage the Pedestrian Master Plan Crossings program, prioritizing critical pedestrian safety crossing improvements. * Serve as project manager on projects involving several design specialties including arterial improvements; develop and monitor scopes, schedules, and budgets; and take corrective actions to address emerging issues. * Participate in the development and implementation of new pedestrian crossing policies. * Provide staff support to the Pedestrian Advisory Board including leading the member recruitment process and acting as a liaison between the Board and SDOT. * Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for all projects. * Collect and analyze traffic data in the field and in the office. Analyze traffic data including traffic volumes and speeds, pedestrian counts, and collision history. * Employ a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of transportation planning with emphasis in non-motorized transportation. * Prepare and present information about projects to community groups, elected officials and other stakeholders. Tasks include: identifying stakeholders; presenting project information; responding to questions and comments; and working to resolve conflicts. * Briefs and delivers formal presentations to the public, government agencies and elected officials. * Responds to citizen inquires by explaining policies and/or investigating issues. * Participates in consultant selection process, negotiates scope of work, monitors conformance to contracts, reviews and approves work products and approves payments to consultants. * Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: * Requires a minimum of three (3) years transportation planning or development experience. * Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning or related field. * OR: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class. * Current Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one by start date. Additional Desired Qualifications: * Proficiency in Microsoft Project and/or experience using project management software. * Experience with ArcGIS and/or other GIS software. * Strong written and verbal communication skills, and supporting public involvement processes. * Excel with attending, participating, and presenting at public meetings, public outreach, and community events. * Experience managing multiple projects, and monitor/maintain the progress of schedules to meet milestones and budget expenditures. * Hands-on knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian facility design including arterial and non-arterial street design. * American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, a plus. * Effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
