POSITION SUMMARY

The Transportation Coordinator oversees, develops, and analyzes the functions relating to the efficient operation of the New Canaan Public Schools' transportation system including the contract negotiated with a supplier, supplier's personnel and equipment, and district-owned facilities and vehicles. The Transportation Coordinator's primary focus is the safe, efficient, and economical transportation of the district's students between home and school on a routine basis and between other destinations within or outside the district on a special scheduling basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop regular bus routes, schedules and stops that are in compliance with the district's Transportation Policy (# 3800) and contract with its supplier. Ensures that contracted drivers are supplied with route maps and driving instructions for respective routes which include student name, address, school attended, pick-up and drop-off times and home telephone number.

• Coordinate the transportation for special education students within the district as well as those attending out of district schools.

• Ensure the proper maintenance and upkeep of the special education vans in accordance with state regulations and best practice.

• Ensure that the district's contract with its supplier is properly executed including monitoring the accurate payment of invoices and the resolution of any billing discrepancies.

• Oversee compliance with federal, State of Connecticut, and local laws, rules and regulations, and record keeping requirements that govern the operation of motor vehicles in general and school buses in particular, and ensure compliance by the school district and its contractor by maintaining necessary records.

• Ensure effective coordination and communication of student transportation activities among school administrators, other appropriate department heads, students and parents. Maintain a good public relations program.

• Monitor loading and unloading procedures on routes and at the respective schools and recommend changes and corrections as appropriate.

• Promote and monitor an active bus safety program for all students by ensuring proper emergency and evacuation drills, and the use of video cameras.

• Coordinate district's involvement in accident investigations, assist in ensuring care of students, and ensure necessary reporting to law enforcement agencies.

• Maintain necessary cost accounting records for use in the development of subsequent budgets.

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Finance and Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma is required, college degree preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to oversee compliance with transportation contracts, applicable laws, policies and regulations.

• Demonstrated understanding of school transportation issues.

• Prefer experience (5 years) in a student transportation organization with experience in supervision of personnel, vehicle routing and scheduling, driver training, accident investigation, budgeting and record keeping.

• Prefer knowledge of safety standards, laws (federal, state, local), rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to student transportation.

• Prefer possession of a valid State of Connecticut commercial driver's license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement.

• Possess the ability to establish cooperative relationships with other district personnel, parents, contractors and students.

• Possess strong interpersonal and communications skills.
