Job Description:

Maintenance of highways, structures (bridge), roadsides, and signs on state trunklines within the Grand Region. Assigned to Grand Region.

Employees in this class will be required to participate in work element system and participate in team managed work groups. Employee may be trained to operate any piece of equipment. This position also requires that the employee may be

temporarily assigned to other Regions for operational needs such as snow removal. This position requires considerable travel throughout a Region and will on occasion require overnight travel, overtime, or emergency call out.

Education

Education typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6

No specific type or amount of experience is required.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7

One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level with required work elements.

Additional Requirements and Information

Satisfactory completion of the Department of Transportation Maintenance Work Element Training and Certification program required for the specific level.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a MI Department of Agriculture Pest Certificate in Cat. 3A & B, 5 & 6 if requested.

Possession of a Group A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions.

Valid motor carrier physical exam card.

Valid MDOT equipment operator's permit.

Starting Pay & Position * full-time transportation supervisory position accountable for overseeing, planning and coordinating the daily operating functions of their assigned depot(s) Essential Duties & Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. * Ensure safe, proper and efficient use and operation of all issued equipment * Includes reporting of issues and correcting them if able * Develop drivers, evaluate their performance and provide coaching opportunities * Provide clear and concise communication to relevant audiences for appropriate reasons * Recommend operating improvements through the examination of KPIs and/or task analysis * Conduct administrative functions. * Includes: hiring/firing, correct usage of Kronos, overseeing/managing vacation scheduling, scheduling of the workforce, etc. * Maintain accurate customer information for routing * Ensure customer satisfaction * Via the creation of timely and effective routes, notifying relevant parties of issues and managing the resolution process. * Conduct monthly driver meetings * Includes individual reviews of route level metrics and budget reviews * Ensure adherence to GLWAS policies, procedures and local contractual language. * Report all accidents and follow investigative protocols/paperwork. * Open assigned depot(s). * Maintain depot and report any issues/concerns. * Receive shuttle and assist in loading/sorting of goods onto the proper route trucks. * Ensure all routes go out, covering routes personally if needed (for emergency situations). * Manage incoming calls from customers and drivers and assist in issue resolution. * Assist if needed in the reconciliation of routes * Route the next delivery day's business in a timely and effective manner * Close and secure the depot(s) as needed. * Other duties as assigned. Qualifications * Pass a pre-employment testing (Drug Screening, Breath Alcohol Test, Physical Agility Test, Background Check). * Pass a drug test at any time during employment. * Adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in the employee policy manual and any applicable contracts, signed agreements, and work rules. * Cooperates with all management and staff of GLWAS. * Follows all MLCC rules and regulations, as they apply to the position. * Use alcohol in a responsible manner when related to business activities. * Maintain a safe driving record (if applicable). * College degree or equivalent through relevant work experience. * Preferred supervisory experience in transportation, distribution, or logistics Supervisory Responsibilities * This position manages multiple teams and is responsible for their performance management. Travel * Moderate travel required. Work Environment * This position operates in a warehouse environment. * The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. * The noise level in the work environment can be loud. * Requires use of warehouse equipment. Physical Demands * This is a very active position. The employee must frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, stoop and climb throughout the day. * The employee must frequently lift, carry, and/or move up to 55 pounds and push or pull up to 100 pounds of force on a cart; frequently ascend and descend stairs. * The employee is regularly required to read and communicate in English. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
