Position Purpose

The sales volume growth of our Branded Feed products in Texas coupled with the new Unit Train origins and destination has amplified the need to coordinate, track and execute the Unit Train activity. Back in 1991, the feed team partnered with the BNSF to create the most efficient rail system in the U.S.

This system is measured and benchmarked by looking at cost per ton mile, miles per car achieved annually, managed shipments per FTE and it far exceeds all other systems moved by rail. Continuous monitoring and close coordination with the BNSF has been identified as a primary contributor to the efficiency and continued successful growth of the system. Since the first train shipment in August 2001, we have more than doubled the volume shipped from the Midwest to our customers in Texas.

The critical nature of this activity for both the origin plant as well as the destination requires scheduling trains by the hour, not the day. This position is one which will require a high level of influential ability in a complex operations/logistical environment. This work has been primarily handled by one FTE but the fleet size has doubled and the complexity is far more acute for the business.

The daily tasks, which are outlined in the JAQ, are required by the business to be performed 7 days per week and at various times in the day or night requiring the need for a nontraditional work schedule. The high level accountabilities for this position will be to provide daily railcar audits and follow-up on the entire SB fleet, adjust and update the Unit Train model to meet the needs of the business, and communicate on a professional level to BNSF grain desk personnel as well as the appropriate personnel within the SB enterprise. The day-to-day touch points of coordination will involve the local Cargill plant personnel, the planning group, as well as BNSF personnel at a variety of levels.
