Job Description and Duties

Under supervision from a Senior Transportation Engineer the Transportation Engineering Technician is responsible for assisting with the administering the Material Plant Quality Program, performing laboratory operations and testing, maintaining compliance with AASTHO Resource laboratory and other accreditations, performing materials related investigations for various reports generated by the unit. This includes but is not limited to performance of CTM, AASHTO, and ASTM test methods, delivering timely test results to Resident Engineers, reviewing and completing construction forms, checking calculations, performing investigations in the development and delivery of material, pavement, failure analysis, and other reports related to the Materials function.

Working Conditions

Position located at 1352 W. Olive Ave, Fresno, CA 93728, Fresno County

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

• Statement of Qualification (SOQ) is required.

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State application. The SOQ must not exceed two (2) pages in length, 12-Font. Please provide a brief discussion of how the applicant's education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria below and qualify you for the position.

• Experience in effectively communicating in written and oral form and the ability to accurately document work activities. Demonstrated ability and experience in understanding and performing laboratory procedures and test methods. Experience interpreting written directions such as specifications, policy directives and plans and accurately implementing direction.

• Balancing multiple priorities and meeting strict deadlines. Organize and arrange data to produce effective work products without repetitious direction. Maintain and report documentation of contractor work activities and laboratory tests performed in accordance with contract requirements and Caltrans procedures.

• Math, science and writing skills. Quantity calculations.
  
  Ability to accurately interpret specification requirements for materials, perform standardized materials testing procedures, report test results, and make sound engineering recommendations and decisions. Demonstrated ability and experience working flexible shifts including nights, weekends, graveyard and overtime.

• Ability to use a variety of software to create reports, organize and sort data, perform engineering work and calculations.
  
  Ability to use software to write reports and correspondence in a clear, accurate and concise manner.

• Experience in working alongside a highway, traffic control, and closure logistics for work zoned on roadways.
