By joining our Department of Highways/Office of Project Delivery & Preservation/Division of Maintenance as a/an Transportation Engineer Specialist in Franklin County, you'll have the opportunity to be the emergency operations coordinator for maintenance activities within the Transportation Cabinet.

Holders of the Transportation Engineer Specialist position will complete tasks such as:

  • Create and coordinate staffing on-call rosters for emergency operations and reporting to the Emergency Operations Center.

  • Complete intra-agency coordination with the Division of Purchases, Equipment, Highway Safety, and all Districts across the state for material vendors including tracking salt costs and driver (truck) costs per contract.

  • Be the main point of contact for external vendors for maintenance activity needs (salt, truck and driver, equipment, ect)

  • Review emergency operation plans and make recommendations for revisions, research new and existing technologies to benefit the agency, and be the point of contact with the National Weather Service to keep Division director abreast of predictions.

Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:

  • Learn the calibration process for salt and equipment used in snow and ice duties.

  • Examination of vendor contracts and keeping of schedules

  • Leadership and coordination

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Internal-agency structure/contract review for vendors

  • GPS, ArcGIS, AVL experience

  • Working knowledge of equipment to be used/needed for specific event responses.

Some travel may be required, including to Emergency Operations Center as needed. Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: See Special Requirements.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a Professional Engineer.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification.

Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KRS Chapter 322 Licensed Professional Engineer until licensure is obtained.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
