Our transportation team helps improve the connectivity of the community through solutions that support the safe and efficient movement of goods, services and people.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing roadway projects including coordination with traffic, bridge design, transportation planning, and environmental.

  • Participate in the development of the preparation of engineering reports, plans and specifications for major and minor projects.

  • Preparation and review preliminary and final plans and technical specifications, contract documents and estimates, and make recommendations for additions, deletions and substitutions when modifications are necessary.

  • Communicate and interact with project team members, client representatives, review agencies and others as appropriate to project. Assist in resolving a variety of complex problems (e.g., conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements).

  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.

  • Ability to learn Kentucky Transportation Cabinet systems, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to learn standard operations, policies and procedures of a firm, preferably within the A/E industry.

  • Advanced knowledge of the practical application of engineering principles, practices and techniques, including AASHTO guidelines.

  • Skill in Microstation V8i, InRoads and/or OpenRoads desired but not required.

  • Skill in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to build and maintain excellent interpersonal relationships. Ability to work independently on multiple tasks without immediate and constant supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
  • 0-2 years of roadway design experience. Prior internship experience is a plus.
  • EIT certification in Kentucky or an ability to obtain EIT in Kentucky within 6 months of start date is required.

Holders of the Transportation Engineer II position will complete tasks such as: * Reviews and approves project and/or program related documents prepared by technical and sub- professional personnel as a Licensed Professional Engineer. * Inspects and supervises the inspection of construction and maintenance projects to determine that tasks performed by the contractor conforms to approved plans and engineering standards. Reviews and approves project documents as a licensed professional engineer. * Computes, records and checks quantities of materials used and work completed for semi-monthly and final payments on contracts. Completes daily inspector's report. * Estimates project costs and checks plans and quantities prior to start of project. Holders of this job will obtain the following skills: * Ability to review and analyze transportation plan data. * Ability to determine ways and means for proper expenditure of funds for various transportation programs. * Ability to interpret and draft professional and technical papers and reports. Work is performed in the office and in the field. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure. Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a Master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KY LPE under KRS 322 until licensure is obtained.
